Been brewing for a few years, but I’m posting this one here.

I was supposed to add 1/2 oz of willamette and crystal at the start of a 90 minute boil. I only added the willamette, and realized it at the 30 minute mark. I added the crystal, and split the difference by extending the boil an extra 30 minutes. Which brings me to my question.

Will hops continue to contribute more bitterness the longer they are boiled, or is there some type of diminishing return? The willamette boiled for 120 minutes, and the crystal for 60 minutes. How much will this alter the recipe?

Edit: I’ve plugged the numbers into brewers friend and the IBU difference is negligible. I’m curious if the calculator doesn’t take into effect when a hop addition will quit contributing to IBUs.

Its ruined. No chance of saving this one. Hope you didn't bother to add yeast and start fermentation. Go ahead and toss it. A dumper for sure.

Actually I doubt you would have noticed any bitterness difference had you just added the crystal when you noticed and finished the boil on schedule.

As for answering your detailed question about diminishing returns, I'll let someone with more homebrew hop chemistry knowledge answer

Unfortunately I did add yeast to it. You’re more than welcome to try some next time you’re in Jackson, MS. This is more of a curious question, and not a “Is my beer ruined” one.

Sorry, I was just making lite of the usual "is my beer ruined" question that you did not pose to start my post.

I'm sure it will be fine and what you did was a reasonable response that took some thought on the process of how to correct an error to end up with an anticipated result. I would love to sample but unfortunately the distance is a bit much.

In fact I just encountered essentially the same issue in my last brew. I was brewing a Smoked Brown Ale for others to enjoy when I used 1/2 oz @60 when I should have used 1oz. The next addition of the same hop was to occur at 20 min. I realised my error at 30 mins remaining in the boil so my choice was to add them then . I didn't run the numbers but doubt anyone will notice. (Hey, it's free beer for them. ) A different solution to a similar problem. It never crossed my mind to do what you did.

I'm sure there are those here that can answer your real question in such detail that the rest of us will be bewildered by how they know the details.
