So I came across this neat device that is a hand held spectrometer and when I saw one of their example apps showed ABV of a drink I thought of the potential for homebrew use. I messaged them about it and got the following response:

Although we haven't yet developed that application, it is our intention to develop (ourselves or by 3rd party) applications for home brewing. We have tested for alcohol level but not yet for specific gravity. Based on our experiments we have a good reason to believe that SCiO will be very useful for home brewers. We encourage you to be among the firsts to influence the development of home brewing application - please support our project.
