Hey guys, have a bit of an issue, last night I made a batch of orfy's hobgoblin and everything was going well but I asked my girl to hand me something and she knocked my bowl full of sanitizer off the counter and a few oz of it landed in my ale pale right after I had pitched the nottingham. I know there's been some issues w/ notty yeast documented on these forums but was wondering what your take on it is as I'm not seeing any signs of fermentation (and I'm not just talking about the air lock bubbling). Will it ferment or will that bit of sanitizer have killed my yeast and possibly worse; made my beer not safe to drink. I'd guess probably 3-5 oz made it into the bucket. I'm really hoping it's salvageable as this was my first AG batch and the wort was delicious.

As long as the sanitizer was "no rinse" and in the correct ratio for no rinse application, I wouldn't see it killing your yeast at all. If it was StarSan, I have heard that it breaks down and actually becomes food for the yeasties. Depending on exactly how much made it into your wort, you might notice a slight off flavor from it, but realistically 3oz into 5 gallons shouldn't make that big of a difference.

Wow, I love this sight and how quickly people get back to you. It was a 5 gallon batch and like I said a few oz made it in probably 30 seconds after pitching. the sanitizer was one-step from american brewmaster (the LHBS) Here's hoping it's just the Nottingham being slow. I'll report back in a couple days w/ a new gravity reading. Thanks again guys.

Thanks Germelli, I probably could've aerated a bit more but was getting frustrated with the cooling time. having water out of the tap at 78* makes it a bit tough to get down to proper pitching temps with my little home-made IC, even using an ice bath as it melts so fast. I spent almost an hour and a half trying to cool down 5g to 80* finally pitching just after midnight. Here's hoping it pulls through. Like another member on here quoted, just gotta "have faith in the yeast" :p

so I came home from a night of dancing to do another little jig in my hallways when I opened the pantry and saw my airlock bubbling away! Here's hoping there's no effect on the taste.

It depends on whch sanitizer. Starsan turns into yeast food, but each one is differnet so we need to know what brand it was

good to know this... i was always scared of the bubbles star san leaves in my tubing. Now i know not to care about it.

thanks

Just a note on the "Bad Nottingham" theme that has been moving around, not all of them are bad (obviously). I ordered a packet from Brewmasters and it had my Centennial Blonde going Gangbusters within 5 hours.

and many others!!!:mug::mug::mug::mug::mug::mug::mug::mug::mug:!!!

Thanks for the re-assuring words guys. After 2 days of going nuts it has settled down and I'm looking forward to getting it into the secondary so I can get a good measure on the gravity. My 84% efficiency (first ag, all that reading helped I think).
