edit- sorted out the pump issue.

now for recirc- i was looking at some other designs, and it seems like some folks use the locline inserts. anybody have a way to use those that doesnt cause splashing and oxidation?

the other thing i saw is the Center Out Forced Infusion tube from brewboss. kind of like the recirc overflow tube in robobrew, but instead of just having the wort drop straight down the tube (and get oxidized i assume) on its way to the pump it forces it into the grain bed.

i was thinking of rigging up something with some silicone tubing instead, but with some overflow capability as the big problem with malt pipes and recirc is that if you dont set your pump to match the draining of the bed you end up overflowing your malt pipe.

so here's the idea of the brewboss tube, seems like a pretty good way to get stable temps and good wort recirc.

and here's my idea of the set up with the ability to send wort straight back to the pump to help avoid overflow issues. i figure i'll use 1/2 hose, poke, drill or cut a few holes based on my typical 3 gal batch size. i'll start with a 1/8 bushing out of the 1/2 barb for my drain to the bottom, and if that looks like it wont drain fast enough then not overflow then step up to 1/4 inch bushing.

the only drawback is that i wont really be able to use a mash cap very easily. and kind of a pain when its time to lift the pipe to drain..

I like this idea! I am not a big fan of the center drain pipe concept and avoid using it when possible. I try to choke down flow and start stop pump to avoid using it and the top screen.

Bobby can you make that whirlpool tube like the OP's concept? Basically modify it to have a larger arch to go in centered with the lid hole and a threaded SS plug at the end just above the malt pipe screen. I can drill the holes where and as many as i want. Also if you can make the arch squared like the OEM arm. I like to rest my lid on the flat section and may add foam for a grip like OEM. On the threaded plug I prefer external threaded cap for ease of cleaning. Internal is fine too whatever is easiest like a SS set screw. I will also need a threaded plug for the malt pipe screen. Anyone know the threads off hand? Bobby if this is something you can do PM me details. I can stop by to pickup tomorrow or on Friday, my next brew day is this Saturday.

Ordered mine as well! I was trying to figure out how to do this, you just made it easy.

I dont think you want to avoid the drain pipe. Thats a safety mechanism to avoid dry firing the element.
