I was thinking about making my first Weizen and had been looking at Jamil's recipe in 'Brewing Classic Styles'. From my research, I see a lot of people recommend using some rice hulls in the mash. Is this necessary, even though it's not mentioned in the recipe? If so, how much would I need for a 5 gallon recipe? (5.6lbs Pilsner Malt & 5.6lbs Wheat Malt)

Don't quote me on amounts but with high wheat and rye grists, the rice hulls aid in lautering and help prevent stuck mash. Wheat and rye, unlike barley and oats, loose their husk during harvest. They add nothing in the flavour department.

I usually throw in half a pound to a 5 gallon batch if I'm brewing something with wheat or rye. I usually just add this to the grain bill and add the extra strike water needed. Honestly, I don't know if it makes a difference. I'm one of those people who takes advice from others and uses it as opposed to trying to find out the hard way if I really needed it.

I haven't worked with a lot of wheat yet, but the two times I used a high percentage of rye in the mash, the mash nearly turned to glue which made sparging quite the experience.

First time I was saved by 6row, the second time I just got lucky.

I'll be tossing in rice hulls in the future, if nothing for piece of mind.

I use the rice hulls and do not get stuck sparges

I have found those little buggers can really help with problematic types of recipes such as a hef

So a half pound would probably do it, then? I'll give it a go. Also, on a side note, have any of you tried Jamil's Weizen recipe?
