So i was rummaging around in the garage last night and came across one of these that belonged to my grandfather.

That was the last pic I was expecting to see! Really, for some reason I was expecting to see a pic of a last. My dad had several of them.

Yup its a cobblers anvil. Grandpa was a man of many talents.

Maybe he was a man of necessity back when shoes didn't grow in china;)

Disclaimer** my shoes (good old American Red Wings) were grown in china and most likely, if you check, yours were too.

Do you remember "made in Japan"? What ever happened to that? Or Taiwan for that matter...

Anyone remember "made in the USA"? Now that's ancient history!

i have wrenches that say "made in US occupied japan"- hand me downs, i'm not that old...

I remember when Wal-Mart PROUDLY stated that many of their things were Made In America. Then... Sam Walton died... it all went to hell in a handbag after that.

Now there's something conservatives and liberals can hold hands on and sing cumbaya. We need to start making things again.

Creamy, I know Cheezy already told you about the way you post quotes.......Is it too late to +1 him? ;)

Cheezy and Creamy in the same post. That reminds me, there is interweb porn just a click away from any page on the world wide wonderwall.

I saw it at the Drive-in in Cadillac. I really only remember the scene where the guy was being processed on a conveyor and these metal jaws pop up as if to snap down on his junk.

They didn't, actually, but it was meant to remind him that he should remember who was in charge.

I remember that was a pretty funny movie. Looks kind of cheesy now. Might have to rent that one for the kids.

I like learning new stuff.

You Googled it, didn't you! :)

I wondered when I typed the post quoted above if anyone would understand it! :mug:

I think I love you.

Edit: my dad spent a couple of years in his youth as a shoe repairer (Not a cobbler) So he had one of those and a few variations on that theme lying around. Since he died I sometimes think back fondly on how he still used them in later years to good effect. Old skills never die. :)

That's right, they were being turned into unick servents..lol.. I liked the time laps part and the black dude and his big white afro :)

I'm continually amazed at the skills that people just don't have anymore.

I'm a carpenter/joiner by trade. One of the last to do a 4 year apprenticeship in England. Basically, I have the qualifications to teach the trade, but in recent years it is not worth a bag of wank these days when all you need to do to do this job is find a bag of tools on the way to the job store.

I used to be quite proud of my trade, and it has now diminished to the extent that anyone who can hold a saw (And trust me, they are not holding it correctly) is a carpenter.... These days I am surrounded by people that hold hammers and can hit things with them....Why bother any more.

This is the age of the chancer. You don't need to know what you are doing, you just need to look like you know. Nobody knows the difference, and if they did they would not care.

Yes, I am actually quite bitter about how this aspect of my life turned out. I learned a lot of really useful stuff, honed my skills, and it was all just overridden by a wave of who gives a crap. Well, this is why nothing you pay good money for never lasts suckers.

Now I feel better!! :D

You mean having a level in the gun rack of your truck doesn't make you a carpenter? Damn!

LMAO!! Yes, it does these days.....

I've been festering on it since that post. I've had my days of building a dog leg oak staircase from scratch, strapping it to the top of the car, driving it down the Loire Valley and installing it in an old French farmhouse and other stuff like that.....So what the hell. I suppose I got my fun in......But honestly, I feel bad for what's ahead for others. Not for the artisans, they will always be around with varying degrees of skill......More for the poor suckers that employ the growing number of chancers out there.

The past is just getting further in the past I guess. Well, duh! :)

Ive made it a point of never looking at Cathy Ireland's political leanings, because thus far she hasnt done a single thing wrong...

She's a homebrewer as well? I think I'm in love. I did not now about that issue of Zymurgy. Did you guys know about this:

For whatever reason, she spoke in a SUPER annoying voice for the whole movie and looked like this:

But that movie was featured on one of my favorite shows of all time:

Now that was an awesome show that I stumbled upon. What's interesting is that most people just didn't get the humor of it.

I guess that makes us a bit different, eh?

I'd love to see re-runs of this.

FYI they have a new method of making these that requires NO royalties to be paid to the movie studios, so they can poke fun at NEW movies and not pay a dime.

The trick is they don't actually play the movie. They record their comments to MP3 and you sync that audio to the DVD that you already own!

It's called Rifftrax, and you can find them online at: RIFFTRAX. Also, some people have synced the movie and their audio themselves and uploaded the movies to the interwebs. Check your favorite unlegal internet source.

And lots of the old MST3K shows can be found on Netflix.

My favorite MST3K clip...
