Looking for some help...I'm planning an Imperial IPA 1 gallon batch. I'm using Brewer's Friend's online calculator to formulate the recipe. My hop additions are planned as:

.5 oz US Magnum (13.5% AA) at 60 min
.5 oz US Magnum (13.5% AA) at 45 min
.5 oz US Tettnanger (5% AA) at 15 min
.25 oz US Tettnanger (5% AA) at 1 min
.25 oz US Tettnanger (5% AA) dry hop for 7 days

Problem I'm getting is the IBUs are coming in way off the style charts. Has anyone else used this calculator and seen the IBUs go way over? Does the beer still come out right? All the rest of my recipe hits the style except the IBUs.

Thanks all...

In your Account Settings you can change the IBU equation between Tinseth and Rager for recipe formulation, sometimes it helps sometimes not. I've used Tinseth with success until now, I never tasted something that felt way off charts from the equation.

According to style, you can range from 60 to 120 IBUs, which is a huge range depending on your grain bill. That still looks like a LOT of magnum for a 1 gallon batch, when I input in BF I get something around 150 IBUs. Technically you won't notice a difference in taste after ~80IBUs no matter how much you put in (In an experiment on Basic Brewing Radio they even set the IBU ceiling lower at ~50ish IBUs).

I did a smaller beer today, but I did a 10 gallon batch. I used .5 ounce of magnum for bittering- for the entire 10 gallons!

Leave out the 45 minute entirely, and consider reducing the 60 minute addition. You want firm bitterness, but in this case a whole ounce of magnum for bittering a 1 gallon batch is a huge overkill!

You didn't ask about the rest of the hopping, but tettnang is a poor choice for an IIPA. It's nice, and great in German lagers, but it's way too clean and non-hoppy in flavor and aroma to make an IIPA.

Thanks for the input...I'm using the Tettnanger because I have some leftover Vienna malt. I wanted a more Euro style hop and I like the spicier hops...Most of my brewing is pushing limits anyway and I like the idea.
