I've been periodically tasting my homemade meads, sampled some last night. They seem to get better as I slowly drink through them, not sure if it's because they are opening up or I'm just getting more drunk.

Probably just getting more drunk... The original one I made which is 5 lbs of honey in about a half gallon of water is finally not too sweet. I mean, it's ******* sweet, but it's also slightly acidic which is helping it out, and god damn it's strong. The blackberry one I made doesn't taste like blackberry but it has a nice color.

Ah I see. What's funny is I seem to find a better selection than I get here in Florida when I visit cleveland for the holidays. ****** love Speedway Stout. And **** like Avery Vanilla Bean was just sitting on the shelves, it's gone the day it comes out here. Oregon must be ****** awesome for beer.
Avery Vanilla sells out down there?? It's a turd up here too.

Are there any good brown ales? Not one of the Funky Buddha marshmallow cheese cake beers or some one off special release that someone made that one time.

Is there a semi-regular production brown that's good?

Hill Farmstead George is great.

But if we're talking legit shelf stuff, Sierra's Tumbler brown ale is a beer I drank a lot of a few years ago.

Makes sense. It was always my favorite HF saison.

It's actually gotten a little too sour / acidic for my liking (much like Saison du Fermier isn't quite what the first couple batches were in my opinion).

Maybe it's time to blend the foudre beer with some stainless to cut the tartness.

I'm getting to the point where I drink everything within 90 days of bottle date. This isn't counting IPA/dry hopped things obviously because those are best as fresh as possible. But in my experience so far most of the beers I've had are better fresh. As a generalization the only things I've had that are still good with time, or maybe better, are lambics and higher ABV barrel aged stouts/Belgians/barleywines (without adjuncts since they fade). Obviously there are outliers but I find myself more disappointed than not when I let things sit. Yes this post contains a lot of "no **** dude" information

It's the opposite with my homebrews. By the time I drink the last bottle I'm usually thinking "**** I should have waited longer"

Along different lines... some of ya'll might have noticed in the DDT I mentioned I was taking a brief break from IPAs. Partly reaction to ridiculousness of the "new england ipa" scene, partly self-correction (of late I probably have been drinking 85%+ IPAs).
No big deal, right? Who cares. ****, no one here has mentioned it or called it out. 'Cause who cares, right?

I work in beer retail (not representing store, comments no reflection, etc.), and I have many beery friends. The reaction of many of those folks to me simply forsaking a single beer style for a week?

Holy hell. In some cases, you'd think I told people I was going to grow a second head. People think I'm crazy. Or that I won't be able to do it. The reactions have been priceless.

As a larger group? I think New England drinkers have an IPA problem.
