Abyss is not a very good beer anymore. I've been hesitant to admit this because Deschutes was the brewery that got me into craft beer and their regular lineup is still something I enjoy, but this beer is almost totally devoid of any barrel character, is a mess of flavors, and is largely coasting on its previous reputation at this point. Zero chance I seek out bottles, or of any vintages after 2011.
This years Abyss is pretty bad. Makes me very sad.

I'm not sure the last two years have been any better, but I've been convincing myself it just needed time or whatever. But Deschutes will presumably still sell a ton because it's on the BA Top 100.
Honestly I'm not 100 percent sure it's worse than the first time I had it. I'm just spoiled by maple and vanilla and 30 year old barrels

I will say this: in 2013 on Black Friday, Belmont Station in Portland poured 2010-11-12-13 verticals, and to my taste the 10 and 11 were noticeably better than the 12 and 13.

Agree, I think it's mostly age though. It's just not good fresh. Not like Dark Lord where the beer is good for a few years then suddenly terrible for a few years.

Old ones are good. Actually good. 2012 onward is not beer.

12 and 13 were both absolutely gross in my experience, 14 was gross once and good another time, 15 was good, 11 was pretty okay last year, and 09 has been somewhere between really good and pretty good.

Dark Lord is the ultimate ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ beer.

I agree with this a million times. I used to love abyss so much but it just tastes like a shell of its former self. I was a big fan 4-5 years ago and it's just not the same now. I know there's the whole "your palate will change tremendously" in that time, and that's fair, but **** I used to love this beer a lot. Either way a fresh fresh squeezed is still a wonderful beer. And I'll still most likely look for abyss and dissident once a year either way

Yeah I might have to trade for these. I still have a soft spot in my heart for Deschutes for a lot of reasons. I just wish this beer wasn't diving off a cliff.

Julian, please.

They have changed the barrel percentage and type over the years for Abyss haven't they? It seems to me that they've been spreading the barrel portion thinner and thinner over the years in order to produce more of it.

Has anyone had Oakshire Hellshire 1 lately?

I remember 5 years ago everyone getting their panties in a twist because it was suppose to be the second coming of wooden hell and when people drank it, they **** all over it.

I thought it was a pretty good brew back then by BA barleywine standards and havent had it since. (It reminded me of bigfoot and how as bigfoot ages, it goes through some awkward phases before becoming glorious.) Im assuming its prob pretty good now that it had time to mellow out or become completely infected like #2 in the series.

barleywinefiend any thoughts?

do you think the recipe changed? the process changed? the people making it changed?

or did your palate change?

God damn, it's idiots like that that drive trade values to ridiculous levels. No wonder people find it hard to trade for Tree House!

But in all honesty, my one trade for Tree House was for Terrapin's The Walking Dead:confused:! He put up the ISO, I just happened to be checking reddit at the right time:p.
