I'm really enjoying the power struggle between MD owners and soon-to-be Rare owners traders.

Am I the only one totally, 100 per cent not interested in the new Rare?

Have we pretty much mastered IPAs, as a brewing nation?

Are there still any decent sized markets in the US where a number of good-to-great local-ish IPAs aren't easily available? I know there's still crap on the shelves everywhere (60 minute has national distro, right?), but the easy availability of top-tier options seemingly everywhere is damn impressive these days.

I didn't recognize the feeling for a long time. Now I do. It is shame.

It's not something I have pride for, but rather feel ashamed of myself for letting it come to this. How did I slip so far without noticing it? Without the realization that I'm literally and figuratively hiding away the object of my shame in a dark, cool closet? How did my "cellar" get to be this big? What on Earth have I done? Why do I have so much I don't know why I bought?

This whole thing is ******* stupid.

I had that feeling. I drank beer until it went away.

I am honestly not interested. I always enjoy BCBS and its variants, but Heaven Hill BA beers are usually my least favorite barrels for bourbon BA beers.

Pretty sure regular BCBS uses Heaven Hill brand barrels. So...

I believe reg is a blend with predominately Heaven Hill, but there are several other Heaven Hill BA beers that I don't enjoy the barrel character of. So aging longer and soley in old HH barrels is not a selling point for me. Would rather get some regular or coffee which are infinitely easier to obtain. Make sense?

A few years back Deschutes had one of their brewpub-only beers that was a 15% something-or-other and offered it on the rocks. Now this is going to bother me until I can figure out what it was...

Now it seems that I had it right all along.

I mean, it should be pretty clear at this point that all the rare BA stout releases are 90% hype and 10% good beer. With this insane level of hype, is it even possible to separate out "I think I might like this" from "I will definitely like this because everyone else likes this"? Psychological experiments have shown that just a few strangers' opinions can be enough to change someone's mind; how can you even attempt to hold on to the tatters of your own taste when bottles of this stupid stuff sell for hundreds of dollars? How can you drink this stuff and definitively say that it's you, not the cultural substrate of ludicrously expensive, oppressively hyped craft beer, that takes pleasure in its drinking? It's a battle of your lonely, haggard, infintesimal will against thousands of years of natural selection and social pressure. That's not a battle that you will ever win, regardless of how many Rares, MDs, or Xbox360s you might be getting for your trade.

I agree with you. But, as a counter point to this part, I'd say...who cares? It's like the scene in the Matrix:

You know, I know this steak doesn't exist. I know that when I put it in my mouth, the Matrix is telling my brain that it is juicy and delicious. After nine years, you know what I realize? Ignorance is bliss.

So who care what is making you think that what you are drinking is the best beer ever (actual taste, hype, other people's reviews, etc.) if at the end of the day, it leads to the same experience: you thinking you just drank the best beer ever.

The only way you could do it is to find a bunch of similar beers and do a blind taste test.

Anyway, this is why I don't try to chase the latest beer of the week and have tried to stop trading in general, outside of sending a few boxes back and forth here and there with friends or people I enjoy swapping boxes with. I'm learning to just enjoy what I have available, which is a lot of really good stuff. I'm trying to not even chase the limited beers that hit town anymore. If I stumble upon one so be it, otherwise....meh. Not worth it.

So who care what is making you think that what you are drinking is the best beer ever (actual taste, hype, other people's reviews, etc.) if at the end of the day, it leads to the same experience: you thinking you just drank the best beer ever.

The only way you could do it is to find a bunch of similar beers and do a blind taste test.

I don't chase whales but I'm also not going to drink the same 4 shelf beers the rest of my life either. I like to try new things, both local and out of state, and I even like to mix it up with beers that I have had before. Saying it all tastes roughly the same or whatever is as silly as chasing every last release.

We cool brah, I thought maybe you inferred that from what I wrote. Agree there's a happy medium there and, like you, I enjoy trying new stuff/stuff from other places. I just no longer make it a priority, especially for the out of distro stuff. I can't even keep up with all the new breweries and beers around Denver, let alone trying to figure out the rest of the country.

In this case, Aviator which is a mediocre North Carolina brewery that makes a lineup of utterly forgettable (but not actively awful) canned beers, is releasing a 15% "Belgian Imperial Triple aged in foeders".
