I know people aren't fond of GBH, but this is a FANTASTIC read on craft acquisition from the owner (i think) of Creature Comforts
From a 2014 press release from Creature Comforts, just for background on the dude. Probably a very good insight, looking forward to reading the article:

"Exciting news: We’re very proud to announce that Chris Herron has accepted the role of CEO at Creature Comforts Brewing Company. Chris left his previous position as Finance Director for the Open States, National Accounts, and Military Spirits and Wines at Diageo on March 4 to begin his journey with the Creature family. We couldn’t be more excited about the talent, love, and passion for craft beer that Chris will bring us. He told us, “I always wanted to start a craft brewery since I got into this industry 13 years ago. But my homebrew let me know early on that if I was to be in the craft industry, it would be on the business side, not the brewing side.”"

I like Cedar Creek but would not describe that beer as hazy in the NE IPA vein.
Hmm the cans I had as part of the variety pack and especially the variants had that characteristic to me. I'll admit I haven't had a whole lot besides that pack though so could be off.

Certainly a well thought out and presented piece.

Problem?

How is AB planning on effectively changing the perception of their core brands (and thereby positively affecting their brand equity) by bringing down the price of all other premium craft brands if they only own around 10 breweries, with only a couple of which that produce any real volume?

If that's their plan, they're going to have to either produce WAY more beer or acquire WAY more breweries or maybe both.

Both of those things will take a LONG while, but, then again, maybe this is their "long game"?

Reading this got me thinking about something else, which is that any owner of a brewery that distributes outside of their regions is either:

1) Already huge and profitable;
2) Looking to be bought out; or
3) ******* insane.

Everything in that piece is a reference to shelf space, and the main goal is squeezing the tier of craft that's larger than your neighborhood place, but smaller than New Belgium or whatever. I have to wonder if the Modem Tones of the world are that long for it. (Then again, that business model has always seemed kind of crazy to me but I suppose if you're super ambitious there's not much alternative.)

Mostly this.

Actually, if you believe that it's their motive, those are exactly the breweries that they are looking to approximate in price and perceived quality. Big national craft breweries.

Great read. This is the thing that worries me as well. AB Inbev operates on an entirely different scale and scope than the largest Craft brewery. They're doing this to help AB Inbev brands as a whole at the expense of everyone else, nothing more.

Devaluing other brands to help you increase the perceived value of your struggling brands only works if you produce similar products on similar scales. That's the thing that the article misses. It tells you all about their supposed motives, but nothing about execution.

With The High End's current portfolio, that strategy would take centuries at their current speed of acquisition and expansion of the acquired breweries' production capacity, so unless they step things up exponentially, this "strategy" isn't viable.

******, you're making me carry this on in two threads? Damn.

When was the Goose Island purchase?

How many breweries did they purchase all or a stake in in calendar 2016 alone?

I think you underestimate the viability of this strategy, and it seems the executives at AB Inbev do seem to value it. As much as I have faith in your vast body of knowledge, I think said executives may have a few tidbits of info regarding the beer business you may not be privy to.

Agreed. Personally, I'd like to know what their end game is. Doubt they're going to show their hand any time soon. At present, though, I just can't see it being anything other than novelty, at best, and an EXTREMELY long game, at worst. If it IS the long game, that's some SERIOUS Darth Sidious pawn acquisition, there.

OK, so you agree with me? Of course it's a long game. **** off, let me play my damn game of 9ball before responding to your stir fryed ********.

Hazy ipas can't melt steel beams.

You should check out the 2Roads brewery tour. Steel beams holding the building up are from Carnegie Steel.

The local FB beer groups see nothing wrong with the logo of the newest local place. What?

Shocking that people who don't know IP law and reflexively side with any brewery being sued for infringing upon it (aka most of the beer community) don't see a problem here, right?
