What happened to Almanac? I remember the first Farmers Reserve I had was outstanding. Now I see them on shelves places and have been really excited to drink them more. All the recent ones I've had have been very one note and lackluster. Did they change something or am I just misremembering my first experience?

I had a Valley of the Heart's Delight the other night that was fan-*******-tastic. Hope this helps.

Everyone remembers their first as being awesome.

I like their hoppy sour series, but I'd generally agree with you. So many of them seem to be straight sour and meh, with the exception of...

Best Farmer's Reserve I've had yet.

Best Farmer's Reserve I've had yet.

Such good balance...nice puckering tartness without the overwhelming acidity typically found in their beers. Abundance of apricot and a surprising bit of funk/complexity. This and their Brettaville beers will be welcome in my rotation at any time.

Cheers!

They've had a few hits here and there since the original Farmer's Reserve series (each of which was great, including the pumpkin one), but are generally lackluster. To me, Almanac is similar to Cascade - single note base beer, interchangeable fruit.

Still want them to do a beer called Poor Richard's (or Pour Richard's).

Funny story: Our bar has a lineup of bottles that we offer on display, but most have been up there 25+ years and are obviously not fit for consumption. Friday night we had a promo with a local brewer & he was adamant about buying the circa '00 Old Speckled Hen off our wall; he didn't even want it chilled. Upon much hesitancy & trying to talk him out of it (clear bottle, lots of sediment, I'm the manager, wanna sign a waiver?) I figured what the ****; I've had enough aged beer to know that at least he (probably) wouldn't get sick. We broke open the beer & I even had a sip; of course it was ******* disgusting with oxidation & off-flavors more prevalent than the original beer. The externalities I didn't count on was that once the beer was burned (Brewer downed it with a distributor rep) other regulars came up & wanted to buy additional beers off the display wall; keep in mind the display is completely light-struck, old & degraded in its entirety. Of course, we declined any other offers, but the point being- has this craft crave gotten out of hand? That's just nasty.

I'm all for experimentation, but I have my limits. I did take a sip of that terrible brew, but it just convinced me more that dead beers should stay dead.

I just had my first taste of Tree House hops. Alter Ego canned 02/17.

It's an excellent IPA, but just that, an excellent IPA...but not the transcendent experience that these sumbitches would have you believe.

About half way through I was fairly underwhelmed so I opened a can of Ninja vs Unicorn (canned 02/16) to do a side-by-side. Got real OCD with it...did Alter>Ninja, Ninja>Alter, Alter>palate cleanse>Ninja, Ninja>palate cleanse>Alter, reefer break, rinse/repeat, etc.

The first thing I noticed is that even with the completely different hop profiles, they were very similar in taste. I mean remarkably similar in taste - but the feel/finish was what made the difference (and of course the appearance - TH w/ that haze, brah!). I will concede that the Tree House had a bit brighter/more alluring aroma, but finished so sweet with that creamy/thin mouthfeel. The Pipeworks just seemed a bit better balanced with a much drier finish and crisp feel, so despite being 8.0 ABV vs the Alter Ego's 6.8, was more drinkable/crushable.

I realize this sounds like local bias but I always try to be as sincerely objective as I can. Obviously I'll need to try more of the TH portfolio to truly form an opinion, but for now I'm firmly in the ****-yo-hype camp.

Sorry to bore you with my inconsequential thoughts, its just...

For the sake of a control in this experiment (no homer at all) I'll gladly take whatever cans of either or both and give my unbiased impression.

Holy **** Sun King is now selling their infected barrel aged beers for $10/can. This can't be real, what the **** is happening.

"Oh ****, some of this overpriced BA Timmie is infected, **** we're going to have to dump this. Wait just a damn minute......idea coming.....yea, I can feel it.........let's can this under a different name like it was our intentional good idea and sell it for the same price!"

I've got this covered on the PW end. Next time my store gets a fresh batch NvU, it's on its way.

Can one of you NE homies step up to get this man some Alter Ego?

Edit: in case it's not clear, I totally want all the Ninja vs Unicorn and all the Alter Ego from the NE homies. Will trade jokes for beers, and possibly beer if it comes to that.

LukeAleTime pardon if I tagged the wrong person... I'm rather inebriated. Aussies unite!

My question, which [edit] is.... thoughts on Two Metre Tall? Awful? Decent? Amazing? I will accept and actually prefer responses in the form of a gif

Last one I had, the plum, was beautiful. The second to last one was a 13 month old soured ale and it was tasting like unblended lambic.

Basically he's been working on it all for a few years and now finally getting it right. For what you are likely to be paying it might not match up to local stuff though. It's expensive even for here so by the time it gets to you... $$$$

Haha yeah I popped on a couple of those from the Bier Cellar email because I'm sort of in love with the story and the packaging from when I heard they were coming a few weeks ago, oh and I'm a sucker. $26/750ml is actually less than I was expecting based on all the factors. Probably won't get around to opening them for a couple weeks since my buddy got the cherry and we will do them all together. Perhaps you can join us too Brez07 if you don't end up getting some for yourself. I'll post back here when I try them regardless. Very curious.

For those wondering what the hell we're talking about:
