I took a Hydrometer reading just before I pitched my yeast at 1.085

I was told that the reading was high and I may not have mixed my water and wort well enough together.

I'm brewing a Kolsh and I've been fermenting for roughly 3 hours.

Do I need to give my fermenter a bear hug and mix my water, wort, and yeast better?

If it’s an extract recipe go to beer calculus and plug in your ingredients. This will give your OG with pretty good accuracy. I don’t know your extract/grain bill so it’s tough to say whether your 1.085 is accurate or not. Just a guess but if your kolsh is within style guidelines I’d say 1.085 is probably higher than the actual.

Check your PM's:mug:

The fermentation process generates a lot of mixing, so no problem. Home brewers have been known to sit for hours watching the yeast go up'n'down.

id say "forget about it" let it sit for 3+weeks...either way thats a very heavy brew! how many pounds of dme did you use?

time and patience will be key to your beer brew. Dont worry about the airlock, if it stops bubbling dont be tempted to open it up, the beer is still fermenting.

echotraveler beat me to it... curious what you used/amounts for fermentables...

Extract kit from Midwest;
6 lbs. of Pilsner Malt Extract, 12 oz Munich Malt 10L, and 4oz Crystal 10L.
1oz Perle Hops @ 7.7 Alpha
1oz Spalt Hops @ 2.7 Alpha for aroma

No worries, bear-hug swirling not necessary. The yeast know where to find the sugar, and will mix it all up for you. In the end (3 weeks from now), it will be mixed and it will be beer.

Exactly... I'm estimating an SG of 1.049 assuming you used LME. So, I'd go with you just grabbed a higher gravity portion of the final mix... as you said, it didn't mix all that well. As others have pointed out - your still good. No worries. You'll have a GREAT brew in a few weeks. Let us know how it turned out...
