Here is to hoping I did not screw up.

Normally I add hops to my boil using a grain bag so that I can remove them at flame out. Last week I did a blue moon clone from AHS. For some reason we decided it was a good idea to add the hops straight to the boil, since the instructions did not specifically say to use a bag like previous kits. The wort was then transferred to carboy without filtration after it cooled.

I know this is not the most scientific test, but if I sniff around the airlock there is a definite hoppy aroma. I am brewing this mainly for my wife who cannot stand strong hop flavorings. Do you think my beer will wind up overly hopped by us leaving them in the carboy? It has been in 8 days as of this morning, the instructions called for a secondary fermentation at 6-7 days, but I have read all the post on pros and cons of secondary and have never seen the need for it. In this case, do you think moving to secondary might help the beer to not have as strong of a hop flavor?

Lastly, I was planning on washing this yeast so that I can keep some belgain strains going. Will the yeast be affected by hop debris that has settled into the yeast cake?

Oh, just to make sure I understand. I have a 5 and 6.5 gallon empty carboy available. If I am advised to go to secondary on this brew, I should use the 5 for secondary?

I never use hops bags, and I even add flame out hop additions for my pale ales/IPAs. It'll be fine. Leaving them in the fermenter won't make the beer hoppier.

I assume you don't have a ton of hops in there, so it shouldn't impact yeast harvesting. When I do yeast washing, the hops just separate out with the trub.

Thank you sir. I think if it sounds ok with the experts here I may skip secondary on this one as well. It might be fun to try since I"ve never done it, but I don't want to mess with if there is no benefit to the end product.

Unlike most of us, her avatar is an actual representation of the real thing.:D

This morning, for your information, my avatar was a picture of my dog.

Hopefully, you're referring to the dominatrix and not the dog......................:D

I don't secondary many of my beers, but you can if you want. If you decide to use one, the 5 gallon carboy would be the one to use.

Wow my first ever attempt at being polite backfired :) Sorry about that Yopper :)

Thank you for the wonderful advice. I am leaving it as it is, cant wait to try it.
