Here is to hoping I did not screw up.
Normally I add hops to my boil using a grain bag so that I can remove them at flame out. Last week I did a blue moon clone from AHS. For some reason we decided it was a good idea to add the hops straight to the boil, since the instructions did not specifically say to use a bag like previous kits. The wort was then transferred to carboy without filtration after it cooled.
I know this is not the most scientific test, but if I sniff around the airlock there is a definite hoppy aroma. I am brewing this mainly for my wife who cannot stand strong hop flavorings. Do you think my beer will wind up overly hopped by us leaving them in the carboy? It has been in 8 days as of this morning, the instructions called for a secondary fermentation at 6-7 days, but I have read all the post on pros and cons of secondary and have never seen the need for it. In this case, do you think moving to secondary might help the beer to not have as strong of a hop flavor?
Lastly, I was planning on washing this yeast so that I can keep some belgain strains going. Will the yeast be affected by hop debris that has settled into the yeast cake?
Oh, just to make sure I understand. I have a 5 and 6.5 gallon empty carboy available. If I am advised to go to secondary on this brew, I should use the 5 for secondary?
