I have been trying to use one of many online priming sugar calculators. It gives the amount in grams of corn sugar and ounces. I dont have a scale does anyone have an idea of what a tablespoon of corn sugar weighs? Its telling me that I need 68 grams or 2 ounces for my 3.5gal batch of Dry stout @ 65F. And for my 5 gallon batch I need 101 grams or 4 ounces @70F. It also asks for desired amount of carbonation in volumes of CO2. Then it tells you by Style how many volumes of co2 it should have. For porters and stouts it says I need 1.7 - 2.3. Do the amounts of corn sugar above look correct? It seems if my beer sits to long it over carbs almost every time. Does the temp of the beer at bottling time really have that much to do with the amount of corn sugar?
 
...5 oz of priming sugar for 5 gals of beer = 1 oz per gallon...

3.5 gal batch = 3.5 oz.

Temp has nothing to do with the amount of sugar. Your main concern should be if the beer is done fermenting and ready to bottle/drink.:D
 
now I just need to figure out how to measure corn sugar by the ounce. 1oz per gallon of finished beer.
 
no but hopefully not for long. I do have a really good one at work I could weigh out 5oz baggies for future use. Do you see any problems with weighing out a few bags. They should store for a few months. Can you imagine getting caught at work with white stuff on the scale...LOL Mabe I should just borrow the scale for a day........
 
Just about every recipe I've run across calls for 3/4 cup of corn sugar or 1 1/4 cup of DME for priming. IMHO usually the recipe calculators help, but sometimes they make things too complicated.
 
I agree most I've seen calls for 3/4 cups corn sugar, but I think my problem is I dont always end up with 5 gallons total. And this time I did not have enough sparge water and ended up brewing 3.5 gal and I just wanted to make sure I carbed it enough but not too much. I think 3/4 cup is about 5oz which would be 1oz per gallon so I would need 3.5oz to prime my small batch of Dry stout. I'm sure I will end up drinking it before it sits long enough to overcarb:drunk:
 
Bottled this stout today....Its awesome everyone thinks I used liquid yeast but I did'nt I used windsor.........I cant wait till its ready, I ended up using 3oz priming sugar for 3 gal and I finally bought a scale
