i have a huge stir plate that my carboys will fit on and i was wondering if anyone has ever put their primary on a stir plate. It makes a starter ferment quicker, would this be beneficial for the fermentation?

You wouldn't want to.....remember the point is to oxidize the starter, and encourage yeast growth, not necessarily fermentation.

You would end up with badly oxidized moose piss.

You could do this. For most beers it isn't necessary as it will churn pretty well by itself. Now if you are brewing some big beers, and/or trying to push attenuation, then this could be beneficial.

This will not result in oxidized beers if you have a fermentation lock on. Once you put that on, no more O2 will get in

I wonder what effect on the flavor of the beer having all the trub constantly agitated into solution would have? Would it throw off odd flavors as yeast-in-poor-health that would normally just die happy at the bottom of the fermenter are thrown into solution?

Like pjj2ba said, if you have an airlock it's not really going to oxidize.

//shrug// I say you do it just to test.

i just might have to on the next brew. i will just put 3 1/2 gal in a 5 gal carboy and the rest in my conical to give it a test run .. i will update

I was wondering the same thing today as I was watching a vigorous yeast waterfall in the carboy. Please update so I know
