I just bought a recipe that calls for a longer colder condition in the secondary.

Any suggestions fora beer that will do well with just primary?

i have a secondary but the directions i have for a longtrail-ish alt says to cold condition it in the secodary for three to four weeks rendering the one secondary i have out of commision for a few weeks.

Is it a lager?

Cool conditioning is better for anny beer and it will always take longer at lower temperatures.

It just depends how much care and effort you want to put into your brew nad if you think the results are worth it. It is also dependant on the type of yeast you use.

You can brew a lager with an Ale yeast and do it quicker warmer. (Am I right in thinking that is called steam Ale?)

Its an alt recipee its an ale but uses lager yeast, i did switch the lager yeast for a german ale 1007 im not to familiar with this stlye but what i have read (and in the recipee) it seems that they need to be cold conditioned, regular primary temps for an ale though. ive got a spot in my house that is about 58 thats as cold as its going to get but everything ive read says to leave it for a longer time although i am fairly new to brewing and i dont know much. I think i read a few post that said poeple like to do heffes just in the primary becase they prefer it cloudy, just wondering if there were other styles that work like this like this.

like it was said earlier, to my knowledge you can brew anything without a secondary, it just may not be as clear and may not have as clean a taste. That being said, you would probably get better results by staying with an ale if you are just going to do primary. The only thing I have tried this way, was a hefeweizen, and like others have told you that worked very well.

Which is prb why a secondary/clearing vessel would be desirable since you would prb rather not leave the brew on the yeast cake for the full term of the primary fermentation and then the longer conditioning period on top...5 weeks on the cake is getting into territory beyond palmer's recommended 3 week max (personally, I have never tested this time-frame).
