Stumbled across Hi-Wheel Wine & Mead on Dekum this past weekend after eating lunch at Tamale Boy. Hadn't previously heard of them so I popped in to check it out. No mead was on-tap, but they had what they call "fizzy wines" pouring. Essentially fermented fruit juices at about 6% ABV. Flavors were clean and nothing tastes off. It would seem they know what they're doing. I can't find a link to any info, but this Thursday (12-11) they'll have their first mead on-tap and possibly in bottles. From what I was told it's 14%, 3 years old, and spent some time on citrus zest, cinnamon, and star anise. Thought it might be worth mentioning here for those of us who are into mead.

Yeastbreath I've really enjoyed the 3 or 4 offerings I've had from Hi-Wheel. I'll definitely have to check out their space now I know there is a tamale cart there as well!
Not just a tamale cart, a really brick and mortar building! Something like 6 or 7 different kinds of tamales; I also highly recommend the huevos rancheros.

Hi - I'm visiting this weekend from SoCal and have tried to do my fair due diligence on where to go (eg: Breakside, Cascade, Phreim, deGarde). I was wondering if anyone had any trips on anything going on Fr-Mon in terms of releases or events. Thanks!

Be aware that neither pFriem nor De Garde are in Portland; Hood River is an hour east and Tillamook is about 1.5 hours west. Depending on how badly you want to visit either place and any other commitments you might have, you might want to consider spending those driving hours at one of the other fine breweries in Portland.

Some updates on Fat Head's: There's a fresh batch of Head Hunter on which is tasting particularly awesome, and it's also available on cask. Another IPA, IBUsive, heavy on Mosaic, is currently being dry-hopped. The new batch of Ultra Pils is pretty great too. I think all the beer is great. (I also work there but seriously!)

How does it compare to the other batches? First batch I had (late November?) was pretty good, though didn't live up to the hype. Second time I had it (about a week before Christmas) it was pretty bad. Barely got through a single pint. Decided to re-visit them in a couple of months til they got more comfortable with their system.

(I'm talking about HH BTW)

The new batch is MUCH better. The first one was good but rather bitter

Made it to Fatheads to try the new batch of HH. Definitely the best batch so far. Also really enjoyed the Gose that they did with Breakside. Nice fruity flavors, with a touch of tartness. Worth seeking out.

Need help. I'm starting to plan a bachelor party in Portland (most likely) in August. I don't have an exact count yet, but it will probably be 6-10 people mostly from Chicago and Denver who are all into beer to some extent. I don't necessarily need beer related events (but we will certainly be hitting a ton of breweries), but I'm wondering if there are any weekends in August that are better than others...music festivals, other hipster shenanigans, whatever.

If we are looking to rent a house, is Southeast the best area to do so? It's been a while since I've been out there, so I have no idea.

Thanks in advance.

There are literally at least five beer events going on every weekend in Portland between Memorial and Labor Day. So pick a weekend that works for you and the groom and there will be something going on.

Take a look at the Upper Lip for a super chill place to land, enjoy some beers, maybe even have some locals join the party. We hosted a bachelor party there a few months ago and it worked great. Easy place to go after a nice dinner and launching pad for more festivities.

LOOK AT IT!!!!

IBUsive is on tap at Fat Head's. 7.5% 100+ IBU IPA. It's awesome. I'm gonna be at the barrel-aged festival at Saraveza this weekend as well.

I still haven't been to FatHead's. Might need to get over there with the wife this week on date night.

Coming up to Portland for the de Garde release and Tart Fruit Fest. Not that i'll have any room left but does Fat Head's in Portland sell anything to go? Had no idea there was a Fathead's up there until yesterday. First time to Portland so forgive my ignorance :)

No worries buddy, I don't think they have anything to go.

I live something like 20 blocks away from fat heads and had no idea it was there. Such is Portland life.

We're staying about half a mile from Cascade so I think we're basically set. Cascade, Upright, Commons, Cascade, de Garde, Cascade, and then maybe more Cascade. Excited to invade. Probably see plenty of you at degardebrewing

If you're in that area don't forget to hit up Apex for taps and Belmont Station for bottles / taps.

Nice! I'll be coming up from the south land for the first keepers release as well.

All that cascade is going to rot your teeth.

Growlers are available, and there's also about 30 guest taps with great beer. Right now we have St Bernardus Abt 12, Double Jack, Ayinger Celebrator, Logsdon Cerasus, and a ton of other stuff.

Does Fatheads have growlers/bottles of Hop Juju available?

I just googled "fathead portland" and clicked on "beer", I think. And then "Today's Taplist" or something like that.

Will be up in Portland from Thursday-Sunday, pretty damn excited to check out the town.

Anything noteworthy going on aside from Zwickelmania? And is Zwickelmania as cool/fun as the sites descriptions make it seem?

I vote yes, it is pretty cool/fun. Anytime you can get access to the production side of a brewery, drink free beer, and pick up swag is a win in my book. I myself will be in Astoria at Ft George for Festival of Dark Arts Saturday. Big 'ole stout fest where I can go aggravate sea lions once I'm fully torqued is my bag these days.
