Such a unique fest, though I don't know how a handful of breweries got away with not using the fest yeast.

It's never been a rule that you had to. And then Logsdon went and broke the festival a couple years ago, which I think opened the floodgates for other breweries deciding not to follow the "not a rule" as well.

Seems like that goes against the spirit of the fest, but if they are making tasty beer I'm sure no one will complain.

Hi locals, I have a few non-beer-related questions, hope that's kosher!

So my wife and I have been planning our trip next week and since it's a vacation and not a beercation (my wife is sober but tolerates my obsession), we're doing lots of touristy things too, since she loves that ****.

Can anyone tell me how much time we would legitimately need to visit/see the following attractions?

OMSI
Lan Su Chinese Garden
Pittock Mansion
Portland Japanese Garden

Those look really cool and we want to visit them all, but I'm just trying to get a sense of how long we need to set aside to do so. Thanks in advance!

You could spend a good chunk of time at OMSI if you hit everything (submarine, planetarium, etc) so I'd plan for at least 2-3 hours to get through everything. The gardens probably will take about an hour, more if you're the type who will take the time to actually go slowly through the garden to be able to take in all the detail. I went to both with my daughter and we spent just under an hour. I probably would have been there a little longer if I had more time to enjoy things than keeping up with her.

Have not been to Pittock mansion yet.

awesome, that's what I was anticipating (2-3ish hrs for OMSI, 1ish hr each for the gardens/Pittock)

I'm an anal retentive planner type, so I like to maximize what we can do by clustering our activities in the same 'hoods

for example, considering OMSI > Hair of the Dog for lunch > Kidd's Toy Museum to kick off our Friday out there

You can do Pittock Mansion in an hour and since it's pretty close you could also fit in the Rose and even the Japanese Gardens as well. I'd also suggest making the trip out to Multnomah Falls if you've got the time, it's about 30-35min outside the city, but get there around 9am it gets crowded on the weekends...

next question...if we planned on heading to the coast early early on Thursday, somewhere in the Seaside/Cannon Beach area, can anyone recommend a good breakfast spot? we're going hiking at Ecola State Park that day before we visit De Garde and want to stuff our bellies

Agreed - never been impressed with Blue Star, not a fan of the brioche dough. I enjoy a simpler, more blue collar donut...Delicious Donuts on Grand/Burnside is my go-to.

I am also a fan of Coco Donuts on Broadway and Tulip Pastry Shop in St Johns - favorite Maple Bars ever. Also Tonalli's donuts on Alberta are fantastic.
