When I get messages like this its time to move on...

I wasnt lying I am just new and when it said to add this to water etc I made a mistake and thought it was saying to "Make a starter"

Fk off. I'll go somewhere else. What a waste of money this site is for new brewers.

Would you like to link to your PM you sent to me calling me a dick, prick, **** off etc? Pretty sad when you come to me calling me names, I respond by blocking you so I don't have to see any more messages and you start printing them into the forum and I get a pm about them from someone else. Stay classy Ontario.

I said there is no need to be a prick about it and laugh at me. I didn't call you anything. I said there is no reason to act like you are. Whatever.

Sorry I have just seen a lot of a holes berating people around here lately.

You can have your site back.

Why take a run at Ontario? I see the type of person I am dealing with. Im talking about beer and now you want to start flaming my country. Go ahead loser.

Soooo get angry with everybody else based on the actions of one individual?

Dude, you need to chill. Here's the CliffNotes:

- OP has a problem
- You have similar problem so you jump in and indicate you are a newbie
- We tell you how to fix it or give some causation as to why your problem is occurring
- You tell us we can't be right but then again tell us you are new

You just need to understand that people on here are incredibly helpful but can change from friendly to wry and sarcastic in a heartbeat if you come in here thinking you know more when you confirm you are new.

I'm not trying to be rude at all, my apologizes if it comes off as such.

Im only angry at the actions of one individual. But, I have seen several others get upset here over the past while as well for the same type of thing.

swampass is not being sarcastic, he's being a ????

The LHBS has admitted to one other similar case this week involving my yeast. For sure I thought it was dead. Again, I couldn't afford to wait any longer.
And the back of the notty yeast and their website I thought for sure said starter....

It is an issue that has been raised. I don't know if it's gotten worse or people have just spoke up about it.

But what do you expect from people who can turn a thread from normal to weird/debate/loony-bin before you can say "should I use a secondary?" See Thread Killa Thread, Tap Room, and any contest page that requires people stay logged on until the random time that the contest holder posts information. That can get ridiculous fast....

I think that people who cannot respond properly to those who are new to the hobby should not respond at all. If its too hard to just say "Please use the search" or do what Revvy does and say "Hey check this link out" then just move on. Too many good people walking away from here.

Maybe have a points system and unlock certain areas of the site as you become more worthy? LOL

It was fun.

I would like to offer the same apology if it means I stop getting pms calling me a prick, dick and ******* as well and then for you to not post my response to your insults as if you didn't do anything to cause them.

I didn't call you any names. Stop trying to save face. You are acting like a child. Taking runs at Ontario???? LOL.. I said there is no reason to act like an A hole.
There just seems to be an upswing in people berating people and acting like a holes lately.

My PM addressed you in the following manner.

Then I got the following from you...

You are ****ing pathetic. I gave you info to prevent this from happening. At least I didn't lie about my packages saying to do a starter for dry to try and save face.

I stand my ground here. Stop being an a hole...

Yeast is starting to do its thing, I guess. 24hrs and its kinda sorta bumpin' along. Nothing like the dry packs I'm used to, but I understand its a different thing. I'm not in a clear container so its hard to see what's going on.

I'm shaking every few hours to keep it moving. Once I don't see/hear anymore hissing I'm going to put it in the fridge and let them settle out, then gear up for next weekend.

Whether you think 1 vial/pack of yeast is sufficient, making a starter will do one thing that is pertinant to the discussion at had.

It will prove to you whether or not your yeast is truly viable or not. Make a starter and you KNOW whether your yeast is alive or dead BEFORE you pitch it.

Glad its going. Imagine how long the lag could have been in 5 gallons

Had a smack pack that was expired the other week that didnt expand and when i opened it the smell was sour and rank. Thank fully the brew shop owner had given me 2 for the price of one since they were a month expired and the other worked, the sour smelling one went in the trash.

Out of 25 or so, not one DOA including packs shipped in the heat of summer. Yeast is very resilient - they've brewed beer from yeast left in the bottom of urns from ancient Egypt. Use a starter and you'll be fine.

This.

Even if yeast appear to be dead, if there's even a couple thousand cells left you can "grow" a proper sized pitching slurry.

Maybe, but a lot depends on your time frame and equipment. can a well equipped biological lab bring yeast back from the dead-maybe. Can your average homebrewer working in a kitchen and needing the yeast next weekend, not likely.
I've had wyeast packs not expand a millimeter in a week. for $5 I'm not going to put the time and effort into possible reviving one of that thousand surviving cells. For all practical purpose that yest is DOA.

Oh I'm not talking about doing it quickly. But with proper step-ups and a stir plate it's definitely possible.

As a real-world example, what about slants? Those suckers don't have very much yeast in them.

I'm looking at my recent brew. A porter that I did on Friday. I started from 10ml of frozen yeast from December 2011 and stepped it up 3 times over the prior week. With the first 2 steps the only sign of activity was that the wort turned creamy looking (yeast in suspension).

Starting my next tomorrow from even older frozen yeast!

It is now blowing krausen out the blow off tube.

Make a starter, wait long enough to be sure, have a back up plan.

HopHeadGrady. Ignore what has happened on this discussion and give the rest of us a chance. This site has been absolutely great for me. I read a lot, digest the responses and decide what is good info and what is crap and learn a LOT.
