I'm looking for suggestions for a partial mash IPA recipe. I can mash about 4 lbs of grain. For the rest of the fermentables, I'd probably use pale malt extract.

I'd also like to try out dry hopping for this brew, never have done that before. What hop variaties do you like in an IPA. My LHBS has a great selection.

Thanks!

I really like cascades, simcoe and amarillo right now. My DFH clone is dryhopped with simcoe and amarillo, and I love that flavor. You could try that recipe if you're a fan of that beer.

I recently brewed a partial mash IPA to try out a new mini-mash tun I built that holds up to 6lbs of grain. For a 4lb tun you would need to substitute some DME for the extra 2-row. This recipe is my take on an IPA with some malt backbone to back up a "Pliney" set of hop flavors. I have made an all-grain version of this that came out excellent, the recent partial mash brew is young still but I think will be just as good in a few weeks.

This should be about a 1.067 OG with about 75 IBU, mostly late hops.

pssst....brew the Lupomania :)

thanks. I was looking for a new partial-mash recipe since AHS was out of the Bell's Two-Heated kits.

I think i might price this one out and possibly brew it. Looks and sounds like a really good brew. I think I'll add the 1lb of carapils as well. Now just gotta figure out where to get all those hops..lol

This is one I have in the secondary right now. I mashed 6.5 lbs of grain, so you would have to swap out 2.5
lb of grain for 1.5 lbs extract. Smells great, and taste pretty good to:) Bottling it tomorrow, will have to wait a few weeks to see how it turns out.

I honestly don't think you'll need the carapils. The head is super rocky and lasts until the end of the glass. When I made that comment I must have had some residue in the glass that killed it.

Be sure to post in the thread how it turns out! :mug:

Yea, I meant to come back and edit my post. I later saw that you mentioned you had a nice head and carapils probably weren't needed.

I'll most definitely post back in the thread. I have all my ingredients sitting in my wish-list cart on AHS. I'll probably order it w/in a week or two. With the hop shortage I'm going to make a few adjustments, along with an adjustment in the malt profile due to having to order in different quantities. I want to plug it into beersmith to see how it compares, but these are the small differences:

2.5lbs 2-row vs 2.25lbs
5lbs Extra Pale LME vs 6lbs
3lbs Light DME vs 2lbs
4oz Cascade vs 5oz
1oz Nugget vs .5oz (figure i will use the other .5oz in place of the missing 1oz of Cascade)
1oz Columbus vs 1oz Summit

Great looking recipes, thanks.

For a 5.5 gal batch, for the grains I'm thinking:
7 lbs of light extract
3 lbs of 2-row malt
1 lb of crystal 40

This should get me an OG of around 1.065 or so. Now to decide on hops and a schedule...

Summits add a pretty essential character to this beer, IMO. If you need to replace them, do so with Centennial or more Cascades (though neither should be easier to come by I suspect). The other substitutions look fine...if you're in a pinch you could add that other 1/2oz of nugget earlier to compensate for the IBU loss if you can't find cascades.

Also, the caramel malt certainly did something for the head retention. I do suggest keeping it, or carapils, in the grain bill. If you have to order a minimum quantity you might as well order 1lb of carapils and use 1/2lb of that here and 1/2lb in another brew.

Cheers.
