Doing my second brew in a bag. I calculated too much water. I am still in the mash. I can tell I have too much water. Can I boil off some water prior to starting the hour boil where i will start adding the hops without ruining the beer.
I added 9.5 gallons water to 14 pounds grain. I plan on squeezing with the bucket with holes inside second bucket. I don't have a way to hold the grain to drain so I plan on holding it as Long as possible before putting the bag in the buckets. I don know whether to toss some of the wort or to boil longer. Def won't be an issue to boil off til you get to your correct pre boil volume then start your normal 60 min boil.

Happens quite frequently and people adjust doing just that

Yeah, no problem to boil off as much as you need. If you have some DME lying around you can boost it that way, if you get impatient.
 
Thanks so much, there is a learning curve and I goofed up. My first BIAB was a northern brewer kit. This time I did the calculations on my own.
Lol, northern brewer directions clearly state it's easier to adjust up rather than down.i think I have another question coming. Thanks, Yvette
 
I'm now doing a 90 minute mash just to calm down. I'm also going to do a mash out at 168 degrees for ten minutes. I'm using california select malt and morebeer reccomended mashing this IPA at 147 to 149. I did grind my grain twice. I love my mill from jack Schmidling. I bought the hardened rollers adjustable. I probably be out there until midnight the way I'm going. My first BIAB was delicious and I'm hoping this will be too
 
If you need the 90 minutes to calm down, fine, but the conversion will be done long before that unless you have your mill set with a really big gap. With the milling of the grains that I do, conversion takes less than 10 minutes. The same holds true for the mash out. If you need the time to calm down, mash out won't hurt anything but it won't help the brew. Mash out is only needed if you are fly sparging.

For your next brew session since I am too late to this party, if you have too much strike water, you could add more grains to your mash and simply make a bigger batch of beer. It's another option to consider.
 
Hi, you are not too late to the party, I'm up to the pre boil after doing some other really stoopid stuff. I decided to put the wort out of the brandy-néw, shiny 15 gallon kettle into my old 8 gallon kettle which has a spigot to realize that I didn't have enough room for a good boil, so I switched back, genius, I know. I just didn't want to **** up the new kettle because me trying to hold the hot bag of grain standing on a step stool didn't last too long before I said screw it and slopped it over to the pail all over the side of the nice shiny new kettle. I've decided I would be better off consulting my tarot cards on the strike water calculations than using the calculator without reading all the directions. And why, I decided to add more water I can only say I had to have dough balls on my brain. Any how, if your not laughing by now picture a women standing on a old enamel lid on top of the bag of grains inside two nested pails when the ups truck shows up and he couldn't get out of here fast enough with the kettle roiling away in the back ground. If your wondering I haven't started drinking yet. But I do think I'm under control at this point. Also, I have a whole bag of organic malt I could have ground up and made MORE beer.
 
Just part of the learning curve... We've all made mis-steps along our way, but we adjust what we need to correct them. Relax, breath and enjoy the experience. Each small mistake will make you a better brewer in the long term.
 
I actually did this last weekend. I was doing my first AG brew and I brought 4 1/2 Gallons to mash temp, I ment to put half in the mashtune and heat the other to about 200 and add that to the HLT. Well I got excited and dumped it all in the mash tun added the grain and I had soup....
lol I was really upset then I realized hell I can boil it off. Beer is fermenting like a boss as we speak turned out perfect.
