Going for food and a drinking wander about tonight over in Larryville. Suggestions from the peanut gallery? I never go over there so I know nothing. I know we're starting at some place called New Amsterdam.

Belvedere's Ultra-Drive is my favorite non-brewery spot in the city. It doesn't have a huge craft beer selection, but it's such a fun time that it honestly doesn't even matter. It gets packed, but it's more of like a chill club atmosphere where you actually have room to move unlike New Amsterdam. Not sure what type of events they have lined up this weekend, but their 90's night is fantastic.

If you're going with a big group of people looking for a place to eat, Smoke Tacqueria or Banh Mi & Ti would probably be your best bet.

All three spots are within a 5 minute walk from New Amsterdam.

I honestly forgot this place even existed.

Just four of us, so not a big group.

I would suggest reading about Smoke Tacqueria to see if it's up your alley. The wait can get long, but Bierport is next door and they'll call your cell to let you know your table is ready. The service can be incredibly shoddy, but for me the food is so good that I don't even care.

Umami (top 5 spot for me in Pittsburgh) and Piccolo Forno (no reservations needed) are great, but they are across 40th street, so a little bit more of a walk than Smoke is. And they are not as casual as Smoke. Round Corner Cantina is a located in this same area and is a little more laid back. Cheap tacos with a nice outdoor seating area. Apteka in Bloomfield directly up the street from New Amsterdam is pretty good as well. I know a lot of people enjoy it there.

Yeah Smoke is like the only place in Lawrenceville that I was actually familiar with going in. Them tacos are lit.

This whole ordeal is the brainchild of a friend of ours, and supposedly he has it all mapped out in his mind. I'm kinda along for the ride, but I was trying to get an idea of maybe places I should try to steer him to/away from if necessary.

I'm always up for a Smoke taco though so I will happily eat there if it works out that way, for sure.

i'll be down there tonight as well for a quick drink at roundabout. lots of good spots. i'll omit the breweries.

allegheny wine mixer has great cocktails, small but usually good draft list, and reasonably priced hard to find wines (or some i'm told). small place but you can usually get a seat.

pusadee's has the best thai food i've ever had but i don't know if they're open right now.

spirit is cool if there isn't something too crazy going on with a cover. the pizza there at slice island is real good.

bierport is another cool spot if its not super packed downstairs and you can get a seat. great draft and bottle selection and i always though prices were fair.

belvedere's is fun if you're in the mood for that. so many others like cantina (great outdoor spot but rough service when they're busy), piccolo forno for pizza/italian, grapperia for cocktails, and maggie's farm is a 2 minute drive from the 40th st bridge (one of pgh's best kept secrets).

speaking of other lesser known spots, i went to acacia recently in the south side and got a pour of 2009 saz 18 for $17.

I forgot about Pusadee's. That outdoor seating area is beautiful, and the BYOB option is always always always a plus.

Acacia unfortunately closed down. Definitely a shame, but from what it reads it looks like they are taking a temporary break and are thinking of a way to come back a little later on down the line.

well that sucks. i guess i'll just have to settle for $250 pappy shots at butcher & the rye for my high end bourbon fix.

Eating there tomorrow.

You're in for a treat Brian. Everything there (including the cocktails) is so good that you can pretty much just blindly point at items on the menu without even looking to see what they are. Atmosphere is cool as hell too.

While on the subject of food, I know some of you are Bourdain fans.

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/08/business/media/anthony-bourdain-dead.html

Sad to hear about the Bourdain news this morning.

Anyone here happen to watch the Pittsburgh - Parts Unknown segment? I've watched it a few times with friends and family, and it always struck me as odd when they pass Brew Gentlemen and Bourdain asks the person driving him about the brewery. The dude says that "it attracts a lot of suburbanites who want to get The Wire experience". lolwtf

I really adored the Pittsburgh episode of Parts Unknown (the fact that it pissed off so many people here was amazing too. It's Bourdain, not a Guy Fieri commercial for your city). I truly understood Tony Buba's argument, but to then later prop up Sousa a segment later is kind of hilarious. To me, BG is definitely less "white savior" than Superior Motors (which I enjoy, but whatever).

As for the Larryville rex, if you're ever looking for later night eats, Smoke has a hell of a late night happy hour. Goes from 10 - 12 (I believe) and it's $3 mystery tacos, small and cheap queso and chips and cheap ribs. I believe all of the drinks are half off. Place is usually a ghost town by then.

Yeah that really rubbed me the wrong way.

Jeevo always with the proper food recs

Wouldn't roasting it darker take away from the barrel flavor or anything the beans picked up?

I can't speak on the proper way to barrel age coffee light/dark but I think dark roasts seem to work better in beer? Definitely want to try those beans though if any gringos want to snag me a bag.

Pretty sure BA coffee beans go into the barrel when they're green and then roasted.

I also believe that all of the prior Happy Mug/Voodoo collabs have ended up on Happy Mug's site within a few days of the events.

Is Roundabout too obvious? Other side of the neighborhood, but maybe check out cinderlands too?

Random chance, but anyone with a full allotment of BRC VII tomorrow willing to exchange half for some other BRC beers? Only BRC release I haven't been able to make the last few years. Have several BM variants (4 roses, rye whiskey, buffalo trace batch 1, old forester) and Quadfather (Willett) to exchange.
