I think a lot of how they do those is based on who they get submissions from for their blind tastings. They acknowledge HF as a sort of pinnacle-type brewery to them, but they're not on the list.

I’m not saying what they are doing is wrong, I’ve just seen several of those breweries names being discussed with the word hype. Especially J Wakefield.

Especially this year. The rerelease of a lot of their gold-standard beers like Aaron and Damon, beginning to can, variants (especially coffee versions) and their stand-bys.... HF has had a great year.

I'll give you a pass to compare individual beers. Solely based on the massive output of high quality beers from HF, BG just can't compare. They're on the right track, but they're just too small for it to be a discussion, in my most humble opinion.

And it's not because I don't love BG. But for my new money tikks arse, HF is the best brewery in the world. Sorry not sorry and whatnot. I do think BGs best hops stand toe to toe with HFs though.

I've been pretty steadfast over the last 2-3 years in my opinion that, top to bottom, HF is the best brewery in existence. I want to hate them because he seems like such a dick but there is nothing he can't do exceptionally well. Their shelf saisons, namely Arthur and Anna, are the gold standard of american made non-barreled saisons. Some are close or on the same level. None are better. Their hoppy stuff is on par with the hype machines (SS #4, SS#5, and Double Citra being my favs). Everett is perfect. Their other stouts and porters are all exceptional. Their barrel program is top shelf. They have 9-10% beers with more body than 14% beers. The only thing I've had from them that I didn't think was a great example of the style was Mary, their German Pils. I've had almost 30 different beers from them across a wide array of styles and they can honestly do everything very, very well. They have no gaps in their portfolio. I really can't think of another brewery who can say the same thing.

I think there's also a lot to be said for being able to stroll into HF and buy 5-10 different bottles and 10+ draft/growler offerings. I'm probably in the minority here, but I don't put a ton of credence in micro batches of beer. Cool for you if you made a barrel or two of a tasty ba stout, but it doesn't compare to churning out thousands of bottles of highest in class beers every week.

howdy all... been awhile.


You all score on CBS? I only got one at Liberty Beer in bloomfield but after trying on draft im not sure if Im gonna bother trying to grab another this week. Was slightly disappointed after all the hype. Still very good just lacked a bit of a maple punch and was a touch too sweet, maybe the bottle will be better.


Is this worth cellaring? All im reading is the adjuncts fall off fast and its worth it just to drink now.

Not sure why PG's holding a grudge, but it's weird that they set up a field just to vote against these guys - http://www.opinionbrewing.com/ - & that so many of their readers seem to have such strong feelings about them. Maybe because it's 2017 & their website rivals c. 2008 Voodoo's.

As far as places to just hang, it's one of the more comfortable & kinda fun ones, & lots of people are <100% about the beer. Not my favorite product-wise, but I've liked some of their stuff & if someone said let's head there & chill I wouldn't say no.
