Staying near PNC park. I'll have a car Friday but plan will be to use public transit/uber to get around on Saturday since I'll be drinking all day.

Unlikely to be any releases at DG/BG/Voodoo on those days, unfortunately but you'll still be able to get plenty of great beers on tap at each place.

If you're going to spend time at Fat Heads, I'm sure someone will mention Carson Street Deli and Piper's Pub, both of which are fairly nearby.
 
I strongly advise against this, unless you really want to try it. There is also a Primantis in Hagerstown now, if you just wanted to tick that box off on your way there/back.

Thanks! No huge desire to try Primantis, but figured I'll have time to kill and may as well try it.

Caps actually play the Pens that Friday in DC and the couple getting married are big Pens fans, so I'm sure we will be giving each other **** as always throughout the rehearsal dinner.
 
Heading to Pittsburgh next weekend (10th-12th) for a friends wedding. My wife is in the wedding so I'll have a good chunk of Friday and Saturday to myself.

Plan right now is to grab some Primantis on Friday, wander around and then hang at Fat Heads until the rehearsal dinner. Saturday I'll head to Brew Gentleman and Dancing Gnome in the early afternoon. Any other cool spots or can't miss places I am leaving off? Any good bottle shops or liquor stores (for whiskey) that I should definitely hit? Also any idea if there will be a release going on at BG/DG/Voodoo next weekend?

Srsly sobeleg hit up Hitchhiker too. Like this jagoff says, it's very close by DG and it's quite good too. And this guy might actually give you a handy, if you're into that kind of thing.

I'd like to mention that you shouldn't eat at any Primantis in the city EXCEPT the one in the Strip District & only when already drunk. Otherwise you'd be doing our fair city a disservice.

This may be one of the single greatest replies I have ever seen in one of these threads. Very honored to be bestowed with this.

While you're here, you should get a job in "tech", open an artisanal Goodwill, & eat breakfast, lunch, & dinner from a food truck that that uses unemployed, uninsured blue collar people as fuel.

C'mon I can visit Brooklyn for that.



Looks like I'll definitely add Hitchhiker to the list. Was planning on heading out that way to hit up Perani's Hockey store earlier on Friday but may have to reshuffle the schedule since it looks like Hitchhiker doesn't open until 4.

Thanks again for everyone's feedback. Looks like this will be the current plan, still open to further recommendations:

Friday: Giant Eagle Shadyside, Carson St. (Fat Heads, Pipers, Carson St. Deli), Perani's, Hitchhiker. Guessing we go out in the Strip District after rehearsal dinner, so if I head to Primantis that seems to be the optimal time.

Saturday: Dancing Gnome, Roundabout, Brew Gentleman, maybe Voodoo

McMatt's post should be stickied at the top of this thread, to be immortalized in Pittsburgh craft beer lore. It's beautiful free spirited prose brings to mind a favorite quote of mine from Jack Kerouac's road trip through Americana novel, On the Road:

God do I have to spell everything out for you letter by letter? How is Grand Cru different than normal Mad Elf?
I had no idea what that beer was either. It said "Grand Cru," but then said "ale brewed with honey and cherries." But that's just like regular Mad Elf, right?

So I had to go elsewhere to see what made it "Grand Cru."

Im curious enough to buy a bottle of it when/if I see it unless its priced stupid. I regret buying "wild elf" when that **** came out and was nothing like it was advertised as.

Im assuming the raw sugar is what they are using as the priming sugar for the bottle conditioning so thats slightly different from the norm but not enough to call it a grand cru, right? I also think I read that they added an abundance of tart cherries to it which I dont think regular mad elf gets.

Mad Elf is the only Troegs beer that I've ever really enjoyed that much. I don't know when they moved from Harrisburg to their current location though.
 
Did troegs move to Harrisburg before or after that first year of barrel aged mouflon? That **** was fire.
They moved to hershey before they had that first mouflon release. I personally like a lot of troegs beers. Dreamweaver, perpetual, hop knife, and sunshine pils will always be beers that i'll buy cases of. Nugget nectar was definitely better in the old spot though.

I still like Troegs. Their IPAs suffered for a long time after they moved. Perpetual was first brewed right before they moved to Hershey, and the first few batches were really good. After they moved, I actually wondered if they bottled the wrong beer. They used to only brew "hits" but have been a lot more hit or miss since the move.

I go through a lot of Sunshine Pils cans though. Fantastic.
