I never heard of a Canadian Barleywine before. Just because they use Canadian malts? I don't get it.

While I'm thinking about stuff from Canada.... Beerwanderer any inside information when the GE in White Oak will start selling beer? I been glaring at them empty coolers for weeks now.

Add maple syrup to anything and it becomes Canadian.

I submit Night Shift Ever Weisse.
NS Ever Weisse is good as is Crooked Stave Petite Sour Hibiscus and Cinnamon. The Hibiscus in EW was barely detectable underneath the big strawberry and lesser kiwi punch. Expected the CS beer to be undrinkable but it was pretty tasty. The list of bad hibiscus beers pretty much consists of all others that have used it. Hibiscus beers are not something to seek out.

It's next to McKeesport. The White Oak GE is an independently owned store(I believe) so I don't know if you'll have any info on it. Just thought I'll ask cause it seems to be taking forever to get beer in the store.
Ohhh, that one. They should be getting beer this week.

Agree with this on the Crooked Stave. The regular cinnamon hibiscus is tasty, espcially for a beer I expected to be awful, but the apple and peach whiskey barrel aged one was mind bending to me.

A salt & pepper Gose, I'd line up for that. Someone has done this already right?
GEMDRFL had one on tap last summer from an obscure French (I think?) brewery.

EDIT: My bad - it was Freshie Salt & Pepper from Nomad Brewing out of Australia. Never heard of them before or since, though.

Am I misreading that description, or reading to much into it? They dont say peppercorns, they say pepper variety. Did you try it? The reviews seem somewhat mixed. Can't believe more haven't thought of this. It's right in front of them.

So I stopped in to whole foods Wexford since I live out this way now and the growler prices were all over the place. Do they have deals on them ever? I'm ashamed of myself for buying a growler of sole fruity dabs for $28 but I was really in the mood for a nice dipa today. The pub area is way nicer than last time I was out there when it was crammed into a corner like gessmdrfl.

The best deal is the $5 flight consisting of 4 5 oz pours. I've not paid any attention to growler prices anywhere. I don't buy them. The last one was two years ago and it went down the drain anyways.

I'm ashamed of you too for paying that for a growler.

We all know how cheap I am. Don't make me feel worse.

Yeah, description says Tasmanian pepper berries. I tried it & liked it enough, apparently (3.5/5), & commented on a "savory depth" that I assumed came from the peppers.

Looks like you're digging that Gocean.

That's ridiculous. It was $19 for a 64oz fill at GE (and completely not worth it, thanks for the terrible recommendation barflybastard ;)).

That **** was pretty pricey. And there wasn't a lot of it. And it sold quick. I'm not justifying the price, but I understand the price.

Do you feel worse after that ringing endorsement?
Oh my growler is almost gone. I was doing yard work all day and in the mood for something like that so it got the job done. I thought it was pretty good, but nothing special. I would have rather had fatheads hop marauder but that was $34 so I had to draw the line somewhere.

I'd never pay $28 for it again but at $19 I'd consider it. Yinz pay that for bg growlers all the time and I felt this was pretty comparable

Basically a smoked sour beer. Didn't get much salt or sea likeness. There was an interesting lingering aftertaste that would need to be attributed to something, so I guess it could be one of those things. I was digging the smokiness though, that part really surprised me. I would have preferred the sourness be dialed back a shade. Didn't really notice the abv. The other beer I had while I was there was serviceable as well. Had a couple sips from some of the others I was with they all tasted decent. My opinion is they can say, and/or put whatever they want in their beers. If they taste good I will drink them. I can get behind a brewery that makes saisons, and wilds. I have had bad beers from them (dat Yoedler), so I'm not singing their high praises. Their beers are reasonably priced, they have a pretty nice outdoor area. The description they give for the beers are sometimes weird, their methods may be unconventional also. You may or may not have stange encounters with pizzas while you are there. They may not put out the best offerings to appease everyone, but maybe its what they were going for. The comparisons to JK are not on the same level but I can see where the association comes from. If they can dial in their consistency, which I understand is not easy, but not having a lab just seems so simple. I will have to go back to sample more of their offerings

I'll chime in here. My bro that was running the department recently left and is being run by a new guy. He'll find his way. However there is also new store management (insert Amazon joke) that doesn't understand the beer market and always thought they were undercharging for everything based on the bars he goes to in the area. And the manager of the whole Specialty team (cheese, beer, wine, coffee) is a bloated ******** yes man that has no spine and will do whatever the people above him tell him to do. Basically, things are going to get worse there before they get better, if they ever do.

Well that's reassuring. I figured they just jacked prices up to pay for all the renovations but I guess it's a little more complicated. I always feel like the pipers method of selling draft beer cheap in order to cycle through as many kegs as possible is a win win but not everyone sees it that way.

It absolutely is but some managers are more focused on short term than long term. The margin on kegs is crazy. Even at the low low prices they were before, it was still like a 55-70% margin, whereas bottles were around 35-40%. You try to bump kegs up to bar prices, people will stop coming as often. So in the short term you'll see a lift, but long term you'll lose customers. Bottle sales are the base, the kegs are the frosting, but without frosting you're just left with a ****** sponge cake.

That's a good deal. 20 for a half and 40 for a full at whole foods south hills. I enjoyed it myself but not paying 20 again for a half. That said I've spent 20 on worse things....

Why in the **** would anybody buy any of this **** at these prices with local breweries there killing it w/ significantly cheaper growler prices? Is it just the convenience factor? I.E. - already there buying groceries and/or breweries are too far? I mean, I sometimes have issues paying Fat Heads growler pricing when it gets north of $20 and I'm the biggest FH fanboy there is. **** $28-$40 growler fills. Eesh.

Exactly this. Some people will keep buying, but eventually customers will start dropping off and owners and managers will talk about the "bubble bursting" instead of "we got too ******* greedy and priced everyone out of our establishment"

Yes, convenience for me. I dig Sole stuff. It's always high quality. Not Trillium/Tree House but in my opinion very good to excellent. The fact that I can get it 10 minutes from my house with no wait and no need to leave work and stand in line is very appealing. I rarely think about price too much but I did hesitate for a moment on the fruity dibs at $20 for a half. To find out Wexford was charging less actually is really irritating though. Sounds like a total money grab from WF South Hills but I paid it so I guess it's shame on me. With work and little kids, there is value to me being able to stop in there and get something high quality quickly. The beer was very good as well.
