I'm not crazy about the Laphroaig I had. Too phenolic. I'm not opposed to peaty and smoky but it was a little unbalanced for me. I'll give bruichladdich a try.

Bruichladdich and Kilchoman are much less phenolic - not as much iodine and sea spray...but still overwhelmingly "Islay". Laphroaig and Ardbeg are both gonna have a ton of that phenolic bandaid/iodine character (IMO) cause they are right on the coast. Lagavulin is coastal too but for some reason they don't seem quite as phenolic to me. They are the bourbon version of peated islay scotches if there was such a thing. A little sweeter than the rest. I actually think it's the most accessible of the Peated Islay scotches. That and probably like Bowmore (not very peaty at all) and Caol Ila.

Lagavulin might actually be good for you if you werent a fan of Laphroaig.

Or just go down to pipers and buy flights until you figure out what you dig.

Edit: sorry for going all hornydevil word vomit on you. I just really like Islay Scotch.

Definitely appreciate the info. It's rare for me to have enough time to hang out at pipers long enough to drink scotch flights but maybe I'll have to take a long lunch some day.

I can appreciate that. I made it a point to leave work early about one Friday a month and grab flights with my brother - usually the "staff picks" flight or whatever - otherwise, I wouldn't have had the time either. Totally worth it.

Sunshine Pils is probably the greatest beer that God ever crafted.

Had a Helltown Brown for the first time in a long time last night and god dammit it was legitimate. Felt like 2011 in my mouth.

Southern Tier Lemon Drop or STFU (sexting Terry Francona's uncle).

Current best name for a beer in Pittsburgh:

Fury's Nut Brown Ale - "Nuts of Fury"

I disagree, its a very good name but i think Couch Brewery's Blonde Shag is the current best name for a beer in Pittsburgh.

Kid: Mortal Kombat, on Sega Genesis, is the best video game ever.

Billy Madison: I disagree, it's a very good game, but I think Donkey Kong is the best game ever.

Kid: Donkey Kong sucks.

Billy Madison: You know something? YOU SUCK!

A friend of mine lives out in Minneapolis near Surly and offered to bring me some beers to try when he comes back to Pittsburgh for Memorial Day Weekend.

Anything in particular i should ask him for? Let me know your thoughts.

I love all Surly, but haven't had any since Todd Haug left. I'm sure it's all still good.

Fresh Todd the Axeman is still around I think. Their citra session thingy is refreshing. And I always love Hell and Coffee Bender.

Fresh Todd the Axeman is a thing of beauty. I pretty much enjoy all their hoppy offerings as well as coffee bender. They make 16oz can coozies which are clutch as not enough of these exist in the world.

Grabbed a 6 pack of Helltown Idle Hands, 4 of them were on point & 2 of them were butterscotchy malt bombs. Better odds than I've had from them in a few years, so I guess that's improvement?

What were you at club cafe? Think they've got all those on tap.

Weird that that's all out of the same 6-pack / presumably the same batch. Always assumed it was batch to batch inconsistency with them.

For those who plan on signing up for the III release tonight at BG, can you fill me in on the details later this evening in regards to pick up times on the 21st? I wasn't sure if you were able to choose when you can pick up your bottles, or if designated times were assigned in accordance with what day you signed up (i.e. Wednesday sign-ups pick up between noon and 1pm, Thursday sign-ups pick up between 1 and 2pm, etc).

Will be attending my annual college reunion that weekend and want to know if I should sign up on a certain day or whether or not I need to depart from Happy Valley earlier than usual come Sunday.

This joint is right down the road from where I'm working for the next two days. Worth going? Beers are on the expensive side, but if they kick ass I'd be OK with that.
