Umm . . . yeah . . . there's this place on the Southside that I think makes some decent German styles. Another place on Troy Hill does OK, too.

Was a big Penn fan boy back in the day. Cut my teeth on Penn Dark. Always used to enjoy Pilsner, Maibock, Gold, Oktoberfest. Had to many bad experiences with the place and the beers alongside all the newer better options where these are not issues, has lead me to write them off. Its sad, not sure what they could do to win me back. As for Hofbrau, love the outdoor area to enjoy a cold beer on a warm day. Dont like that I need a forklift to drink my beer or a personal trainer before I go. Never had a ton of their rotating seasonal stuff mostly for those reasons, plus after lunch its too much of a show. I could do without that part also. Maybe if you combine the 2 we could get a decent place?

Truthfully haven't been to Penn in months. Last time we were there it was to pick up a couple bombers of Doppelbock for our Christmas Eve party. Wifey prefers HBH, so we go there. No loss in my eyes. Want to support "local" as much as possible, but I don't like where their focus has gone, so I don't support them as much. Wish they'd just concentrate on German beer, but their ownership is clueless so they don't. Shame, really.

The seasonals are really were it's at, IMO. Have a hefe every time I go, but they do a great job at making some different German and German-inspired beers in general. I, personally, like the atmosphere, but agree that it can get a bit ******-laden at times. As far as the size of the beers, either order a half liter or sack up, bro. ;)

This is the best thing hoffbrau has going for them.
I vaguely remember getting some seasonal hefe from them years ago that was the color and opacity of orange juice and it was delicious. Maybe they were ahead of their time?

I liked it slightly better than last years. It's solid not breathtaking. I don't know-kind of what you would expect. 4/5 stars.....it seems like it is more loved outside of pgh. I actually got descent trade offers from outside of pgh for it (2 hunas for 1 4 pack) and pizza boy Vietnamese sunny side up, troegs peach (one for one).

Just curious, thanks for the info. I tried it year one and found it pretty underwhelming. Stayed away year two. This year, I grabbed a four pack out of curiosity with the intention on only keeping 1-2 and giving the other couple away to friends.

For all you steelers (growlers) and dually, industry folk, has there been notice of more foaming for the metal growlers vs. glass?

It's tough when you know someone paid for new wood, I feel ya. people act like it grows on trees.

We all need to recycle wood more.

Karl Malone once said "save bottles and cans save bottles and cans, Karl Malone don't recycle, once Earf runs out Earf runs out."
