In terms of sheer underratedness goes, I'm pretty sure John Mayer wins that hands down.

Most don't realize that Mayer's image and style is a product of his record label and not what he wanted to do. He wanted to be much harder but they saw a pretty face and wanted to capitalize on it. And he nailed Jennifer Love Hewitt so that alone makes him my idol.

His own fault either way.

Not arguing that but as a struggling musician, if one of your conditions to getting signed and making it is to change up your style, I don't think many would turn it down. It made him a lot of money and very famous.

I appreciate all the bait fellas, but I think I need to stay away from this one...

No bait. Let's here your thoughts. This is civil. I said before that I'm not a Prince fan per say but I respect his abilities as a musician. Same goes for Mayer. Not my speed but talented.

You can argue that John Mayer isn't crazy talented if you want, but you will be incorrect. Totally okay to dog on his douchey persona though.

I'll try to keep it simple...how can any rich and famous musician be underrated, really? I mean he's on a stage with Clapton...so you know...people apparently think pretty highly of him.

When I think of underrated guitarists, I immediately think of like Joey Santiago or Johnny Marr, J Mascis...Doug Martsch ...people like that.

I don't know enough about John Mayer to say anything really. Dude bores me sober.

I think maybe he meant underrated in the sense that the average person may not realize how talented a guitarist he is. They just hear about the women and hear the poppy ******** that's played on the radio. In that context, I agree.

Underrated in terms of his guitar skill. Most people hear John Mayer and instantly think of some pop musician that girls like. I'd be surprised if even a majority of people recognize how talented he is.

Like you said, it's partly because of his own fault and partly not. I don't really care either way, was just making a statement.

Pretty much this. They're known for things other than their musicianship.

Joey Santiago FOR SURE. He was doing really crazy things on guitar and no one else at the time was doing. And it still sounds just as fresh today as it did 30 years ago.

Are you saying that there are way too many other great local guitar players on the shelf for you to worry about picking up old John Mayer? Cause if that's what youre saying i totes agree.

To be fair Kbuzz, J Mascis had his own signature guitar from Fender so I wouldn't lump him in with the other two. - http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/fender-j-mascis-artist-series-jazzmaster-electric-guitar

As for Mayer, I would say he is a solid guitar player but fails to excite me beyond that. He chooses the schlock and the legacy that he has created and really, does it matter how good he is at guitar if he chooses not to play up to his ability?

When talking about underrated guitar players I tend to think of guys who most people haven't heard of. I honestly think Prince was well respected for his guitar playing and it was a defining attribute.
