RE Pirates: If your ultimate goal is to be a one and done in the playoffs, great, I love the Cutch and Cole trades and then getting Archer and Kela. You're treading water and extending the treading water window. If you want to make a deep run or win a championship....Archer is controlled through...2021 is it? Do you really think this organization is set to make a championship run in 2021? Honestly, if they kept Cole and made these trades I could get on board....maybe they get hot and take it in the playoffs. But I just don't see how this is anything more than extending mediocrity.

RE DG: 10 am on a weekend? I'm sleeping. One of you go drink some and I'll live vicariously through you.
This city LOVES an at home wild card game when certain doom lies in the next round. Really, city went ******* beserk last time it happened.

In that case, congrats city. I'll break out some of my good stuff for the parade to celebrate the heroic glorious nine innings this city battled so valiantly until falling short.

EDIT: I mean, I get it, last time the Pirates were anything disco ruled the dance floor.

Can confirm. Was best sporting experience of my lifetime.

Can’t say that about Steelers, penguins or soccer **** half way across the globe (eye roll).

(Wasn’t certain doom in the next round BTW - took the cards to 5)

Barton Fink = best Cohen film. Fight me.
Fighting about which Cohen brothers movie is better than another is like fighting about whether Treehouse/Trillium/Yourlocalhazelord is better. You sound like the least interesting character in a Wes Anderson movie, they're all the same and really why can't any of you actually enjoy anything?

You're not nearly hip enough to catch WORLD CUP FEVER

It’s not about the specific agenda of making the playoffs this year. It’s about improving the team, period. Just cause other teams approach the trade deadline with that agenda doesn’t mean it’s the only legit reason to make a move. I actually think the pirates are great at manipulating MLB business standards.

Why wouldn't it be about making the playoffs this year though? I could see this line of thinking if the Pirates were last in the division, had zero chance at a playoff spot, and were in the midst of a full-blown rebuild.

Chris Archer might improve the team, but the Pirates do not bend over backwards to try to improve the team at all costs. They only will if the price is right. They also can't draft and they will never sign a marquee free agent. I think that prolonged success in MLB compared to the other three major sports is the toughest, and with a "small market" team like the Pirates who look to shed payroll every chance they get and will never be able to compete with other NL teams like the Phillies/Cubs/Dodgers when it comes to acquiring talent, swinging for the fences at the trade deadline when competing for a division title is their best chance at competing for a championship.

It's about making the playoffs this season in a sense, but that's why teams so greatly value years of control. Neither of those deals have to be about this year, or even this year and next year. Baseball requires flexibility, because you simply never know how things will work out. The Nationals this season as the perfect example. No one could have foreseen their struggles and that's why organizations so covet a window of opportunity rather than simply a year, or even two.

I think back to the Mets a few years ago when they lost to the Royals in the World Series. Their future looked so bright, but within a matter of two seasons it's seemingly over. I just think that because the Pirates will never have prolonged success and will never sign big name free agents to multi-year contracts, they really need to strike when the iron is hot. Archer is a fine pick up, and I'll leave it at that.

Yeah I hear you. I don't have any skin in the game as I'm not a Buccos fan. And I, unlike my boi kbuzz think that org has done their fans dirty for a long time. That being said, if you're a Pirates fan, I think you have two avenues of recourse. You can either be excited that they did something tangible and real, or you can continue the boycott and think the org is still doing you dirty by not taking it even further.

As the fan (or the consumer, because lettuce be honest, that's how ole' Bob Nutting sees you), that's all you can really do.

See this is the problem. This is all self-inflicted/imposed, the Pirates could compete and sign free agents if they wanted to. They have convinced a lot of fans that they can't do these things because they can't afford it. If they wanted to be that transparent they would release some sort of annual report. They have plenty of money, they value profits over winning. I would love to hear an argument that the team is broke, or is spending every last cent it has to break even. There is no salary cap in baseball, and Nutting is loaded. Spend to stay competitive. Who knows they might still turn a profit after all.

I toned down my initial reply. I was very much on Beer last night and it was a rough go this morning. I could say that was partially due to the BG III going down like water to make it local to Pittsburgh. Barleywines are such a great way to end tastings.
I've tried to get this back on topic to a large, local beer release on multiple locations. No dice, chief.

I guess the line of 500 scrong that will invade Sharpsburg on Saturday morning will be 100% comprised of out of town hazeboi mules.

So no one but me is gonna try to go to Lustra Day then? Splendid... I guess I can just roll up at 9:59, get my allotment and peace out.
I don't think I have the budget for $22 four packs any more. I will try the new insurrection release though. The last two ipa cans were good enough to buy again. Finally made it over to cinderlands for dinner the other night. Food was great and not as overpriced as I expected. Ipas were decent. The margarita double sour milkshake whatever it is was horrendous. Roundabout is still as awesome as always. Back to the baseball talk.

How quickly did you drink those renegade cans? I thought it was ok the day I bought them, but opened one last weekend and it was very vegetal. The Upgrayedd cans are still holding up nicely though.

Funny but I had the opposite experience. I thought it was a little too pungent (dank? hard to describe) out the gate but turned to a nice pineapple flavor after some time in the can. I drank my last one on Saturday.
