That bad? I was thinking of running to Lustra Day but could only make it sometime mid-afternoon.

There were 200+ in line when they opened the doors.

It had seemed to me lately like some of the hype had been dying down some. I've been able to get multiple recent releases the next day... But that one was just silly with people. I don't remember the last time I went in there in general when it wasn't packed.

I’d be toting my father-in-law, so this doesn’t sound like it would end well for me. After barflybastard is taken care of I would love some cans as well. Happy to pay cost and give some thank you beers.

Arguably the best starting pitcher and best reliever available at trade deadline are now Pirates.

Combined with picking up Dickerson in the off-season, I'd say this might be one of the better years of moves I can remember from Pirates management. And that includes the Cutch and Cole trades.

Can we pump the brakes a bit on the Pirates being cheap ******** that never make any moves yet or no? They have to make playoffs and win WS first right?

More people ahould be talking about this. Everyone just seems happy they made a trade.

More people should be talking about the pirates period. It’s embarassing how few ***** this town cares about their oldest sports franchise. Have a little pride.

I'm sure they would, but they have seen this song and dance before. It wares on you after a while. There wild card runs initially show that the city cares, they have always desperatly cared. Just cant keep doing the same thing and hoping for different results.
My initial insinuation was that they traded for a pitcher that they already had and let go. They got a pretty ****** return in the Cole trade, Moran is not that great, and neither is Musgrove. Cole is miles better than both, and better than Archer. Worst case is they have a staff that would now have both Cole and Archer. Now that would be something to talk about.

I like the Archer move but the Pirates always seem to get these mid-tier guys who won't have a division-changing impact like we've seen happen when other teams shoot for the stars. CC Sabathia to the Brewers, David Price to the Blue Jays, and JD Martinez to the Diamondbacks were all-in trades that the Buccos would never have the balls to do. They could have done a trade like this a few years ago when Meadows and Glasnow especially had crazy trade value and gotten a bonafide star, but it seemed like management wouldn't have given them up for anything. Now they decide to trade Cole and then give these guys up for Chris Archer?

For this post you are awarded 11 points, and may god have mercy on your soul.

Archer is under contract for three more years. Cole wasn't, and I don't think he was particularly interested in staying here either. He didn't seem to me like he was very happy being part of that organization.

I think Archer is being a little undersold by some too. His peripheral stats are still very good, and no pitcher has ever not benefited from leaving the AL East and not having to face the Yankees and Red Sox anymore.

Not a Pirates fan, but a huge baseball fan and I think the Pirates made a great deal overall, both for the rest of this year and beyond. Glasnow is a reliever, and I've always felt like Meadows was overrated for the long run. I'm no expert of course, just my opinion.

Oh, and on topic, are any of you other idiots dumb enough to go stand in line at DG on Saturday?

I'm considering it, because I'm a dumb idiot who does dumb things.

There is no doubt that Archer’s stats will improve by not having to face the offenses in AL East, but is he the type of player that can put a team over the top? Would the Pirates have traded for him had his salary been not as team friendly (but still under team control beyond this season like say deGrom)?

Good move, but I always feel like the organization’s acquisitions this time of the year never targets the higher-tiered players.

but is he the type of player that can put a team over the top? Maybe, maybe not...but what other available player would? Would the Pirates have traded for him had his salary been not as team friendly? Not likely, but that should be commended and is smart team management when you have limited resources ($) to work with .

Who was available at a higher tier? Can’t compare available players this year to years past. The Bucs grabbed the headlines at this years trade deadline. That should count for something.

I was originally planning on going down, but with them bumping up the festivities by an hour and me procrastinating house work last week, I’m probably skipping this. Not sure if I can do early drinking like I did last weekend again this weekend. It’s going to be absolutely crazy down there. Probably just going to hit up BG later in the afternoon.

Archer seems like the best starting pitcher that was 100% definitely available this year, but I feel like the Buccos outside shot of securing a wildcard spot didn’t really increase all that much with his acquisition. Him not being a rental player will help in the long run for sure though, so we will see how this works out.

It’s not about the specific agenda of making the playoffs this year. It’s about improving the team, period. Just cause other teams approach the trade deadline with that agenda doesn’t mean it’s the only legit reason to make a move. I actually think the pirates are great at manipulating MLB business standards.

Hey guys, I'm doing a road trip lif that starts in just over a week, hope you'll offer a guess! Me and my boys will be headed your way!

https://www.talkbeer.com/community/threads/bigfranks-fathers-day-road-trip-6-0-penn-oh-mich.41421/

Okay, let's do a LIF for this trip! I will be traveling from August 10th through August 20th with this schedule:
Fly into Philadelphia
Drive from Philadelphia to
Pittsburgh
Columbus/Dayton
Detroit
Grand Rapids
Cleveland
Back to Philadelphia.

I'm picking up the rental from the Philadelphia train station if you really want to get nitpicky.

Here is the lif. Guess the total number of miles traveled on my rental car during my trip. Closest number wins even if it's higher. If for some wacky reason there is a tie, the tiebreaker is the total number of stamps gained in my National Park passport. Entries will be accepted up until August 9th. Winner gets a box of whatever beer is in my fridge at home.

Feel free to add your best Midwest gif.

RE Pirates: If your ultimate goal is to be a one and done in the playoffs, great, I love the Cutch and Cole trades and then getting Archer and Kela. You're treading water and extending the treading water window. If you want to make a deep run or win a championship....Archer is controlled through...2021 is it? Do you really think this organization is set to make a championship run in 2021? Honestly, if they kept Cole and made these trades I could get on board....maybe they get hot and take it in the playoffs. But I just don't see how this is anything more than extending mediocrity.

RE DG: 10 am on a weekend? I'm sleeping. One of you go drink some and I'll live vicariously through you.
