This might be an unpopular opinion, but these names are responsible for some of my least favorite songs of all time. Blackhole sun made me want to kill myself and every single song that Alice in chains ever wrote made my soul cringe. Kurt and Weiland were slightly more serviceable. Although I mostly enjoyed the STP stuff that came later. Like this:

And I think I'm more appreciative of Kurt Cobain's influence that I am his actual music.

You're too cool for school though.

Oh yeah? Well, they play that **** on the radio. Here, listen to this unreleased Bad Brains 45 that I found in a box on the floor at Eides. What? You've never heard this one?

This I can agree with.

Look on the bright side...

People in Pittsburgh are lucky to have a station like the X, which has been playing these same songs since 1994. And will continue to play the same songs for as long as they are a station. So it's like they'll live forever!

I swear it feels like The X is basically a 24/7 mix of Foo Fighters songs.

I think all the Soundgarden tunes have been migrated to DVE. All 105.9 plays now are Black Keys, Twenty One Pilots and Mark Madden spitting pastrami all over the board while he berates yinzers who are dumb enough to call to talk to him.

Wow, I guess I haven't tuned in for a while.

My buddy and I used to play a game called "What is Currently Playing on the X." We would each guess, then go to their website to see what they were spinnin'. My guesses were usually "Brain Stew," the Nickelback song where he says "Tired of living like a black man", or Creed's "Higher"

At least people are starting to call in and troll madden now. I rarely listen, but the other day there were a few calls in a row heckling him and he was getting bent out of shape. There may be hope...

AIC > Soundgarden > Pearl Jam > Nirvana

I know Soundgarden is usually the least popular of that group but I liked quite a bit of their stuff. Fell on Black Days, Pretty Noose, The Day I Tried to Live, Spoonman, etc. Never really liked Black Hole Sun but I still enjoy them. AIC is far and away my favorite of that group though. I generally preferred their more melodic and mellow songs like Nutshell and I Stay Away versus more hard rock songs like Them Bones but I like it all. Nirvana never really resonated with me. Their covers from the Unplugged show (Lake of Fire and The Man Who Sold the World) are the most enjoyable to me. Pearl Jam is spotty but mostly indifference.

Ok, that's all.

I hear ya - never got that into Soundgarden (that Spoonman riff, though...) or Alice in Chains (though I think their vocal harmonies are really interesting). Was down with STP for their first album, because I was 12, then they just seemed too phony & prefab.

Nirvana, on the other hand, I pretty much credit with getting me deep into music. I've outgrown my resonance with a lot of their stuff, though I can still get into them once in a while. Cobain's influence I see as being two-pronged:
1. They were all about exposing this whole underground world of cool rock to suburban kids like me who'd never heard about it, & would prop up bands like The Pixies, & The Jesus Lizard, & Dinosaur Jr, etc. etc. In that way, I think of Cobain's/Nirvana's real legacy as basically one of the greatest music fans that ever lived, moreso than a great band.
2. This is a weird distinction to make, but I feel like a lot of the artists who actually cite Nirvana as a direct influence - as in modeled part of their sound after them - pretty much blow. Like the same stuff Nirvana liked? Cool, I'll probably dig your music. Just like Nirvana? Hmmm...

And it's pissing into the wind, but I genuinely wonder where Cobain's music would've gone if he'd stuck around.

Fell on Black Days had a good riff too. But the genre as a whole, in retrospect, is just too damn brooding and misery-laden.

Agree with you somewhat on Nirvana. I was really into them back in the day. I must have watched that unplugged performance 4 billion times or so...mostly because I was just captivated by his demeanor and how he seemed so disconnected throughout, as if he was performing on some other mental plane where there was no one watching. I've always been obsessed with the psychology of those sorts of enigmatic musicians (Van Vliet, GG Allin, the Residents, Roky Erickson...**** even MJ and Marilyn Manson to an extent). He was the first to fit that bill and make me aware of that interest. But yeah man...although I liked the music at the time, it's really hard for me to listen to now. I just don't feel the same pull from it. So I respect it and everything, but as you said, it seems that their sphere of influence (both influenced by and influenced upon) is more so what I respect than the actual body of work. Those other bands you listed, esp. Dino Jr, Pixies and you didn't mention them, but the Vaselines, are all bands I still listen to regularly (Dino Jr's "Beyond" is an underrated masterpiece).

Sorry.

We used to chat over on BG, but then the ANALSTROM brothers evicted us all.

The good news is that here, you can talk about whatever you want.

The bad news is that Shuggy is here.

The second bit of good news is that he will probably put you on ignore soon.

Chris Cornell had a sick set of pipes. ******* 4 octave range or something. I wasn't much into Audioslave but i listened to a lot of Soundgarden growing up and enjoyed it more for his voice than anything else.

I was always a fan of this album:

I don't know this one but i'll give it a listen today.
