Not beer related, but I had probably the best meal of my life at morcilla last night. I have a feeling that most of you on here enjoy cured meats so make a reservation. We got the giant board with all the meats. Highlights were blood sausage, 4 year aged jamon, and Iberian pepper sausage. The oxtail and mushroom plates were also amazing.

Also had Sherry for my first time there (popped my Sherry cherry?). I got it cause it was an oloroso and that's what 3f zenne is aged in (haven't had that yet though). I'm also pretty sure everyone here would appreciate that as well, it was like the bourbon barrel barleywine version of wine. Lots of oak and vanilla but so obnoxiously complex that 2 oz was enough to sip on for a while.

I'm a huge fan of Cure (Chef Justin Severino's other restaurant), but was unfortunately disappointed with Morcilla. I loved the concept and the menu sounded amazing, but there were quite a few underwhelming plates for me. We ate there during its opening week, and my wife doesn't eat red meat, which probably were factors in my experience. Plan on going back again though, as about a dozen close friends of mine who have eaten there have said nothing but rave things about it.

Also, Albatross kicked! Not even 3 days and it was gone. I shared a glass when I popped in for a quick growler fill to gift to someone else Saturday at opening, and I will say that it is not only the best beer to come from PA, but it has cemented itself as one of my favorite IPAs period.

Edit: My original post was missing words. Auto correct sucks sometimes.

I know there isn't much participation here in the west, but I heard today from a source that the old Violas bar in Moon Twp is going to be a brewery. A year or two ago I had heard from the owner of The Library that him and his partners bought it, but there hasn't been much action at the property. The person that said it was going to be a brewery is doing the plumbing work there.

On a side note in the west side, looks like Cobblehaus will be open within the next two weeks and is hiring.

Whole Punch mango was tasty and super fruity, exactly how I describe jagoffbrewer. Also got the Irish Breakfast and was really in to the roast and coffee notes.

I really enjoyed the whole punch mango as well. Worth the trip for sure. I like that my kid loves going there with me for the root beer. My wife doesnt want him to think a bar is a place to go for fun...

Are you into port or madeira? I feel like these also fit that kind of niche.

I had a glass of port once with a cigar so i don't think i really got the full effect. Definitely something i'd like to get into. I'm assuming you can open bottles like this and drink a little at a time, rather than having to finish it all at once?

Yeah - with port it's usually a couple weeks to a couple months, depending on what kind. I've read that madeira can last for years after opened. I'm no expert & have only had a handfull myself, but these are really the only kinds of wine I care enough about to actually buy myself.

Thanks for coming out yinz, glad you enjoyed everything.

I enjoyed this first round. Heard it was more citrus this round. I remember it being lots of strawberry and kiwi notes. Was it a super small batch that it kicked that fast and reason for limited growler fills?

I drank a bottle of that new tenacious wee tonight. There was a small amount of acetaldehyde flavor but I'd say it was well within the enjoyable limit. I'd wager that this is one of those compounds that certain people are sensitive to (like diacetyl) and can make or break a beer for them.
