I have an IPA that I've left in the primary for about 6 weeks now.

I want to pitch a brown ale on top of the yeast cake. I haven't seen any posts yet about pitching onto "old" yeast cakes.

Will my risk of contamination increase, or should I be ok?

cheers.

Jamie

If it was covered with beer, then no problem. It doesn't start going weird until you rack the beer off.

i agree with Revvy...i just put a big IPA onto of a pale ale cake that was in the primary for about a month...fermentation happened fast!

Some people feel this is a bad idea (grossly over-pitching) and can lead to off-flavors. There's a rather lengthy thread in this forum if you can dig it up. Never tried it, so can't speak from experience.
