First post here, just wanted to see anybody's thoughts. I just brewed a Honey Blonde Ale on Saturday to celebrate the birth of our first kid (yay). My previous brews were 1 gallon batches and just bumped up to 3 gallons for this one. According to Mr Malty I needed 1.3 vials of yeast; I had 1 vial of WLP 051 and half a vial of WLP 530 and I wasn't able to make a starter so I pitched the 051 and about 1/4 vial of the 530.

It's going along fine and I'm sure it will ultimately be fine, but I was hoping to get some thoughts on how these two will blend.

  • Will the Abbey ale over power the CA V?
  • Will they fight each other to the death and turn to crap?
  • Will they blend perfectly?
  • Is it impossible to tell until I crack one of those bad boys open?

Thanks for any thoughts or opinions!:mug:

I would recommend calling their customer service line for homebrewers. They are super helpful, and if they can't answer your question, they will get you in touch with a lab tech or brewer who can give you the right info. I honestly don't think anyone on here will have the info they will have. So, my answer would be that you won't know until you crack it open!

Btw, you are in Anaheim, get your butt down to their tasting room in SD! They just had on Frankenstout(96 different yeast strains blended) and it was awesome!

Report back, if you do ask them, or when you crack open the bottle!

Thanks, I guess I was just kinda curious what other peeps thought of how the flavor profiles would mesh, nothing pressing enough to call customer service about, but maybe I'll look into it...

As far as the tasting room, I didn't know about it until now, but you can't turn down a chance to taste good beer, right?! Where in San Diego is it? I'll have to check it out.

How did this turn out? I've just done something similar with a RIS, partly as an experiment and partly because I just love belgian yeast profiles.

Sorry, it has been a couple of years and I don't have any of this beer left so I can't be too specific, but it turned out really good. Since I only did 1/4 of the vial of Belgian yeast compared to the whole vial of CA V it didn't really have too much of a Belgian profile so if I were to do it on purpose I would probably do more Belgian since I too like Belgian yeast profiles.

I figured your recollections of this beer might be limited given the passage of time. Glad ot worked out for you though.

Thanks for replying!
