Which is better, and why?

Personally, I've always used pinlock. That was just from liking
Coke better than Pepsi.

Now, I've found a reason. I took a gas connect, and removed
the pin lock barrel, on my gas line from the Co2 tank. I can now
send gas down the dip tube to force carbonate. Since I don't
leave the gas hooked up, I can top off all the cornies every night.

Ball locks you can point the hose in any direction

With my ball locks I've always been able to hook the gas to output to force carbonate until I got a new (to me) keg which emptied the freshly filled CO2 keg. But I do like the fact that I can point the hoses any direction. I like them over the lid so they are not taking up more of my limited space. I also like the fact that if you bang them they won't come off. I had that happen 35+ years ago with a pin lock at a restaurant.... cleaning up soda syrup is a pain.

Pinlocks, you can point the hose in any direction.

If you look at the newer Homebrew style connects,
the red part is the body. The pinlock barrel has the
notches for the pins, not the body. You can still
rotate the connect.

I'm not running the barrel, and I don't need the Co2
bottle hooked up all the time.

What I can do, is use that connect to run Co2 down
the "beer" nipple, and send Co2 down to force
carbonate.
