Am I the only one who read this story, and the first thing I thought was, "I wonder if you could ferment Gatorade?"

Dang, I need to take a break from brewing. This might belong in the "You know you're a homebrewer when..." thread.

Sorry, but I didn't catch a buzz from my aged Gatorade. It was at least 6-months old. The swig I took should have been fermented, but it was still sweet. Would you really want to ferment a Gatorade?

Cheers,

I recently met a fella who claimed that he has abandoned home brewing beer after being engaged in it for years. He went on to say that, "people have died from drinking home brewed beer infected with bacteria." He then added that home made wine is much safer due to it's higher alcohol content.

How true are any of his claims?

I've always thought that an infection would (a) prevent fermentation and you won't have beer in the first place, and (b) manifest as a strong, sour milk off-flavor, in which case you won't even drink it.

Proof? That would be the first thing I'd want before believing a person who makes a statement like that.

I was knocked unconscious once when a bomber of home-brew fell off a shelf and kanked me in the head.

Hurt, but I didn't get kilt.

I die just a little bit every night.

People have died from drinking Coors lite as well.

Agreed. In fact I'd venture a guess that the number of "hey guys, watch this!" famous last words associated with Coors light far outnumber similar events where homebrew is involved even if we could normalize the injury/mortality rate for the number of CL drinkers vs number of HB drinkers. There's also the issue that I can't easily buy HB at any venue away from my house, drink too much and then feel I have to drive home.
