Randy Mosher writes about capping the 2nd runnings in a parti-gyle batch. I am going to try to make a IIPA + APA next week, 10 gallons split to 1.080 + 1.050ish (adding DME possibly + capping.) Total grains are around 24 lbs.

So If I were to cap the 2nd (+ 3rd) runnings with Victory malt how much and for how long? I was thinking 2 lbs, mixed in the 2nd runnings resting 30 minutes.

Anyone done this?

I have done something like that
I used my first and second runings for a barley wine then added about 2 lbs 2 row and 2 lbs of vienna let that mash with a total volume I would need for the PG it was like 7 gal of water for about a half hour

I have a recipe of sorts - or at least a plan! 25.75 lbs in my 10 gallon cooler, 1.057 it works out to, for 12 gallons. Half will be around 1.07something I'll boost with a bit of cane sugar to 1.080 and hop for a IIPA or imperial IPA.

The runnings for the second half works out to 1.03something, I'll cap with Victory, and Munich and some DME to get up to 1.050 and hop like an APA. Should be fun.

I'll collect the IIPA and boil/hop and let the capped mash rest 45 mins or so, sparge and collect right before I start to cool the IIPA ,and then boil/hop the APA. A fairly long brew day but I am looking forward to it.

My one question is can I get it all in my cooler? I know I can for the almost 26 lbs but adding a couple more to cap... we'll see how that works. My other brilliant thought was to sparge with water hot enough to raise the mash temp to 156 (from 148-150) for a bit more body for the second beer. We'll se about that also!
