Just got a message from Pandora. Apparently because of royalties, "heavy users" are now going to be capped at 40 hours per month. Actually, everyone is capped here, but I guess only "heavy users" will notice. I will certainly notice. I work 45+ hours a week, and have it on most all the time. I will hit 40 hours in less than two weeks most likely. Looks like I have a few new Pandora accounts to setup...

I hope this email finds you enjoying a great summer Pandora soundtrack.

I’m writing with some important news. Please forgive the lengthy email; it requires some explaining.

First, I want to let you know that we’ve reached a resolution to the calamitous Internet radio royalty ruling of 2007. After more than two precarious years, we are finally on safe ground with a long-term agreement for survivable royalty rates – thanks to the extraordinary efforts of our listeners who voiced an absolute avalanche of support for us on Capitol Hill. We are deeply thankful.

While we did the best we could to lower the rates, we are going to have to make an adjustment that will affect about 10% of our users who are our heaviest listeners. Specifically, we are going to begin limiting listening to 40 hours per month on the web. Because we have to pay royalty fees per song and per listener, it makes very heavy listeners hard to support on advertising alone. Most listeners will never hit this cap, but it seems that you might.

We hate the idea of capping anyone's usage, so we've been working to devise an alternative for listeners like you. We've come up with two solutions and we hope that one of them will work for you:

*

Your first option is to continue listening just as you have been and, if and when you reach the 40 hour limit in a given month, to pay just $0.99 for unlimited listening for the rest of that month. This isn't a subscription. You can pay by credit card and your card will be charged for just that one month. You'll be able to keep listening as much as you'd like for the remainder of the month. We hope this is relatively painless and affordable - the same price as a single song download.

*

Your second option is to upgrade to our premium version called Pandora One. Pandora One costs $36 per year. In addition to unlimited monthly listening and no advertising, Pandora One offers very high quality 192 Kbps streams, an elegant desktop application that eliminates the need for a browser, personalized skins for the Pandora player, and a number of other features: Pandora One.

If neither of these options works for you, I hope you'll keep listening to the free version - 40 hours each month will go a long way, especially if you're really careful about hitting pause when you’re not listening. We’ll be sure to let you know if you start getting close to the limit, and we’ve created a counter you can access to see how many hours you’ve already used each month.

We’ll be implementing this change starting this month (July), I’d welcome your feedback and suggestions. The combination of our usage patterns and the "per song per listener" royalty cost creates a financial reality that we can't ignore...but we very much want you to continue listening for years to come.

The alternative options ($0.99 for unlimited month/ $36 a year for Pandora One) are pretty good. Sounds like the public has enjoyed Pandora more than they expected.

Definitely not complaining about Pandora. I don't have a single complaint about them. More about the stupid royalties. Anyways, I was mostly just passing along information. I know a lot of people use them.

I use it quite a bit, but I don't think I've ever come close to 40 hours in a month.

Personally, I love Pandora. I used to listen to Pandora 6+ hours a day (basically whenever I was sitting at my desk) but it's blocked at my new location.

I don't really have any problem with this. While the RIAA holds a special place of ire for me I can understand people wanting to be paid for their royalties.

Just checked it out. I can see using this on the road as a pseudo siruis radio thing. My new phone has internet and as long as I have cell coverage, I suspect I could get it to work ok. Maybe not the best quality in some areas, but worth trying.

Got the classic rock tunes pumping now!

Right, but why do the internet stations, like Pandora for example, have to pay more in royalties than traditionals stations just because they don't have the overhead? Seems to me that the royalties should be the same no matter how you are broadcasting them.

love pandora, dont know if i'd hit 40 hours a month. at most i use it 2 hours a day while at work. i also use slacker too.

I love Pandora. Hell, I'd pay 99¢ a month just to listen to it all the time! It's a great service. My only complaint is it doesn't work on my phone! Not all of us can have Blackberries, aholes! <>

I've been using Rhapsody. There's like a hundred channels, no commercials, all free. There's something about listening to surf music while crunching numbers, it's like being in a bizarro-Tarantino movie or something.

I don't have a Blackberry either, dude. And as it turns out, my phone seems to not be supported. Oh well, I could probably figure out how to get streaming from some other site.

there are several alternatives. live365 imeem you can even pretty much had an old router and put up a jukebox of your own. my problem is these companies bring in millions in ad revenue. think if radio local tv stations started to charge you for viewing. one reason i dont like paying for cable or premium channels what show ad's.
