Does anyone order 55# sacks of grain online that find the shipping costs are somewhat reasonable?

The closest LHBS is 2 hours away, so a 4 hour round trip is not only my time but a good bit of fuel to factor in.

If anyone has an online source that has a fairly reasonable shipping rate, please share if you will. Thanks!

Define "somewhat reasonable." :)

I suppose it depends on what you're used to paying per pound for grain.

Maybe this might work for you: I buy my bulk grain from RiteBrew. They're about 3 hours up the road from me, and unfortunately, where I rarely if ever travel.

When I do go there, I order ahead of time and pick it up. But I've also found a friend who travels in that direction from time to time and he's picked up for me.

Perhaps you can find someone heading in a direction where they could pick up a grain order for you?

I just checked at RiteBrew; if I order a 50# sack of 2-row and a 55# sack of Maris Otter, total is $90.35, plus (with the $5 discount) $20.66 shipping, for a total of $111.01. So I have 105 pounds of grain for a cost of $1.057 per pound. If it was just 2-row, it'd be less.

But that's using Speedy Delivery, which is a midwestern service. It's much higher using FedEx.

Do you have any breweries close by? I've looked into a lot of options for getting bulk grain online and pretty much everywhere that I've looked, shipping is about the same. However, I do have a fairly local brewery that will sell bulk grain for a good price and I don't have to worry about the shipping.

I'm in the same boat. No good LHBS. I order 10 lb bags from morebeer and they ship for free. Ordering a 50 lb sack from them does not ship free and ends up costing more. I just order as I need it, with my other grains, and don't have to worry about storing it.

I hadn't thought of this but I do have a local micro-brewery close to me. I think I'll ask them about bulk grains especially for my base malts that I use lots of. Then I can look at MoreBeer for specialty malts in 10# or under quantities for free shipping. Is this the deal where you get free shipping by spending $49?

I do the same.

Mine offers Maris Otter for $60 a bag and 2 row for $45. Really not bad when you don't have to take shipping into consideration. They also have a list of grains they sell by the pound.

Same here

Generally I just order from AIH. They're a few hours close and sacks are reasonable on their $5 shipping.
