Last evening I decided to brew a Bock beer and ran into a problem.

I have a 7 1/2 gallon brew pot and usually do a 6 gallon boil resulting in a 5 gallon beer. My Bock kit contained 7 lbs of an amber LME and I didn't take into account the volume of the extract. Upon addition of the LME I ended up with about 7 gallons in my brew pot and no room to boil. This was after I mixed in the LME.

My only solution was to remove and discard a gallon of wort!

The following is my recipe:
6 gallon water
7 lbs John Bull Amber LME
1/2 lb Chocolate Malt (crushed grain) Steeped for 30 min @ 155 F.
2 oz. Hallertau Hop pellets (60 min)
.5 oz. Tettnanger (1 min)

My OG was 1.046 which wasn't too short of the 1.052 I was expecting.

Question: What will the removal of 1 gallon of wort do to my beer?

The og was a little less, as could be expected. Don't worry- it'll be fine.

But if it ever happens again, do not throw out wort! Get a second pot and boil it, too. Then combine when it boils down. Or freeze it and use it for starters.

But don't worry- your beer will still be just fine. :mug:

Agreed.
Or, if you only have one pot, add only part of the extract for the first part of the boil. After the volume decreases in the pot add the remaining malt. It might take a longer boil but it will be worth it.
