SO after a long brew day when cleaning my kettle out, I left my 1650 ULWD element on after all the water was completely drained out and it started smoking. So i let it cool off and tested it to see if it was fried for good. I only left it on a few minutes and it was heating water again. SO does this mean it is ok and not broken???

Also it turned black from all the residue burning on it, will that come off with a little PBW or bar keepers friend?? I hope :(....

If its still heating then you are probably good. I would just soak in PBW or something to try and clean the scorched element. Bar keepers friend is probably what I would use for the stubborn scale. I wonder if vinegar soak would help?
