Ooops! OR How not to use a degassing whip

Just a quick note. Don't use your wine degasser for the first time in a topped up 5G carboy on high. Start slowly.

Wine holds A LOT of CO2 and it comes out quick when you blast that whip in the carboy.

And the wine comes out of the carboy quick too.

Oh no! I'm sorry to hear that you had a wine volcano. Hopefully, it wasn't so bad that it backed all the way up into your drill and shorted it out (which has happened- not to me, though).

Darn. Hopefully you still have most of your wine left.

wow, good thing you posted this, i was thinking about making wine, and i would have just pulled the trigger and not thought about it. thanks for preventing a mess at my house.

I was lucky that I had 5.5 G in a 6G carboy, topped off with CO2. Stabilized and put finnings in after the wincano. I'll rack to a 5G carboy for the next go around. With what I lost it should be plenty of room.

Just one more reason why I have a mop in the bar.

I knew better, and STILL made a mess degassing my first batch of wine..

It really IS easy to get it to foam up A LOT...
