On forum etiquette and "Likes."

Let me preface this post by stating right up front that I never expect "likes" on my posts, nor do I care how many "likes" I have overall, or my "posts/likes received/likes given out" ratios. That said, I have a question about forum etiquette.

If someone (usually a newcomer) asks a question, and you post a long, detailed response that directly answers their question, do you think it is good etiquette to expect the asker to "like" your post, as a show of appreciation and gratitude for taking the time to answer them?

I confess that I sometimes feel a little jilted when someone posts a question, and I post a long, multi-paragraph response, and they come back with a "Thanks!", but no "like." I feel like if I helped them, the least they could do is show appreciation with a "like." Is that a reasonable expectation, or am I being overly sensitive?

Kombat. I too mis-clicked and want to now disavow any and all association with my above like to your OP.

Is there a limit to the number of likes a user can issue in a given period? Would it be possible for someone to just go around, "like"-ing every post they come across willy-nilly? Or will they run out eventually?

I'm a like-button ****. I give 'em out like candy. My "Likes Given" tally is a testament to that fact.

I find it's easier to press the "thumb up" button than it is to reply back with "thanks" or "I agree" or "haha I found your post amusing". Without it my post count would be nearly twice as high.

If there's a limit, I haven't found it.

Do they mean anything, in terms of your user level? Like, once you've reached 1,000 likes, you get a free year's subscription, or access to a secret area of the forums, or a free HBT growler (I hear there are crates of them sitting in a warehouse somewhere)?

Well, it's definitely not 1000, or 3000. I can say that much.

You can be both a button **** and a post whore if you wish! That's it... press that Like button... Oh yeah... thank them for their witty banter. That's the stuff right there... just like that... don't stop...

Whole bunch of facebook haters here. We know you all have one. It's okay.
Oh, by the way.. here's a link to mine. Friend me:

CAD, everything about your work since "Raising Arizona" with the exception of "Leaving Las Vegas" has been shambolic. Me no like.

I for one am glad you've decided to focus your creative bent on drawing straight lines. Keep it up.

If all I have to say when someone answers my question is "Thanks" I usually hit the Like button instead because it's less noise. If I give a more detailed reply (than just "Thanks") I sometimes press Like and sometimes don't (usually not) it seems redundant.

I actually give out more Likes when someone else's question gets answered, and I think it's such a well written answer that I have nothing more to add. It's an endorsement of their answer.

I don't do Facebook except to access some closed groups, so I might be doing it wrong.

A "thanks" post is more appreciative than a like.

crap, ive just liked saying thanks. ive never used it, but just caused it reminded me too much of why i never joined facebook. Probably something about the thumbs up sign. Now I feel like a dick...

Sometimes I think Facebook enthusiasts think:

But if you don't like my post, then other people won't see that you liked it, and they won't think I'm awesome and popular. Well, actually, I won't think I'm awesome and popular because of all the likes/attention I am not getting.... Must post more and get likes... Err... look at me, look at me!

Kinda like a likes-for-self-affirmation type thing. They are uncomfortable unless they know other people like them/their thoughts.

Now, I was just going to like this post, but I think it deserves more.

Have a dancing banana... :ban:

@rhumbline

To be "dancing bananaed" (from the past participle of the verb "to banana dance") in an online setting is equivalent to

High praise indeed sir.

yeah, I remember catching my little cousin logging on my sisters FB account just so she could "like" her own posts to make herself seem more popular. Pretty much can pinpoint my lost faith in humanity from that moment on

A couple of questions for the forum admins (@Austin ? @Homercidal ?): Is there a limit to the number of likes a user can issue in a given period? First rule of Like Club...

I tend to find that I only Like posts if I'm not actively involved in the discussion. As an outsider I won't dive in, but I will let someone know that their post was humorous or good advice. And when someone responds to a question I posed I don't expect them to also like it, one or the other is good enough. And being a non FB person I avoid the Like button on general principle.
