I also have a lot of... shall we say... embarrassing reviews from a couple years ago, when the app was new and I was newer to beer, a lot of 5-stars on stuff like Sublimely Self-Righteous Ale (which is good! Not that good though). I wish I could re-rate them. It doesn't really matter since I tend to like most of the beer I drink and rate almost everything 4 stars or more.
You can re-rate beers through the app. If you don't use the app you can check into the beer again with the new rating then delete the new checkin, the new rating should persist.

Also, if people want to give something a new rating each time just use the notes field. That's what it's for. Having a note on the rating isn't really all that much different than having a unique rating per-checkin, though I guess if you're trying to do math on your entries it's more difficult to extract the info, but that seems like a marginal use case to me.

People say the location thing uses Foursquare, which I'm unfamiliar with. But is it possible to improve the location search/selection?
I oftentimes like to check into beers when I get home, because spending time checking in "live" takes time away from the people I'm spending time with (and the gf doesn't like it much if she's with me). However, if the venue is too far away, I can't select it.

Is there a way around this or a way to improve this? Perhaps a sidelink for 'Far away' check ins where you select what city you were in and then search for the place, instead of (I'm assuming) Untappd finding your location and limiting you to within ~30 miles.

I don't have time to debate a 4.0 vs a 3.0 on my phone while eating dinner with my gf (she hates that). But then again, I guess I could go back and delete the original check in, and just make a new one. Again though, too much work. Whatever.
I'm not alone. People travel, people don't always check in "live" all the time, people have phone's lose juice or get lost.

The rationale for not putting that in native is probably that it would make it easier for people to cheat for badges, which is stupidly common. The way to get around it is to use a location fudging app. I do this while traveling in Europe since I can't check in live (unless there's wifi which isn't common). I personally use this one, it has gotten the job done in the past though it's been a while since I've used it: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=kr.woot0pia.gps&hl=en

A lot of the reviews I read say it will take over your GPS and can get you stuck elsewhere. Can you comment on that?

Hasn't happened to me. My guess is that those people are just dumb. This app isn't very hard to use.

Plus, if that does happen and it is a legitimate issue, you can:
1) Restart your phone.
2) Disable the developer location setting feature.
3) Uninstall the app.

That's just off the top of my head (disabling the app would probably work too!). So I'm going with "those people are just dumb."

stupac2 , struggling to add my basement bar as a venue for check-ins. I went and created an account to foursquare and all that (it actually shows up when i search it there), but isn't showing up on Untappd, either as "close to me" or if I search it...

any tips?
Cheers!

Have you tried voodoo? I suggest voodoo.

(You probably need to wait a while for it to show up or something. I really don't know.)

actually, it just worked... weird coincidence, i added it like 4.5 hours ago!

that is sad. People actually care about getting pointless internet badges? On the same note, why would untappd care if people "cheat" for badges? Just ignore those people who have nothing better to do with their time.

I like getting badges; but The most I've done is checked in a beer six times in a row so I could get a badge. I usually only check in the first then don't worry after that.

But yeah you see people checking in beers that you know they have never tried (I've had people check in to my homebrew before) or checking in beers they drank years ago to inflate their score.

People are dicks.

I just checked in about 150 beers I drank from 2011-2012. I did it in case my other site account gets deleted, so I still have record of those. Dick move? Maybe...

I mean more people just ticking off beers they know they have probably drunk before they got good taste in beer.

I've seen checkins like "I've definitely drunk this before" on a macro lager.

Ohhhh that is pretty sad. I mean, I've drank dregs just to get a tick but all the ones I added in I actually put a comment with the date from BA.
No wonder I still don't have my all American badge!

That's sort of what they do, but why spend the time implementing that feature if the use case (after-the-fact legitimate location additions) is probably marginal compared to cheating? Given how long it takes to implement needed features, it's understandable that this lags.

No way. I wish I had done it. Lost ~1300 ticks. Really sucks.

stupac2 , I have a friend that upgraded to ios8 and had some issues with the app. He says that the beer lookup just keep searching, never returns a result.

No idea, I don't have an iPhone. He should try reinstalling the app (including deleting the cache), and if that doesn't work go to the forum.

Cool, thanks for the help. I just wanted to see if it was a known issue or to see if others had experienced it.

Hey guys, quick question for Utappd users. If you could just answer the following for me it'd be helpful:

1) Do you check into "vintage" listings on Untappd? (These are beers like Rose de Gambrinus (2014) as oppopsed to Rose de Gambrinus.)

2a) If yes, why do you so? (Some potential reasons: to track how a given vintage changes through time; to track how a beer changes from vintage to vintage; to boost unique counts; etc.)

2b) If no, why not?

1) yes
2) to track how a beer changes vintage to vintage (this is mostly because you can't have a different rating for each time you check in). Not gonna lie though, I do use it to boost the unique count also.

First checkin I tick the standard. Subsequent; I check vintages for tracking changes. I don't check years of like, seasonal releases unless there is a marked difference (new recipe or whatever)

However saying that, if I'm drinking it and I see someone else checked in a vintage I'll tick that rather than searching for myself. That's just laziness

I'm a newer user, so I might not be settled on my approach, but I guess I would answer as such:

1. Sometimes.

2a. I do so if I am aware that there is variation between batches. Often times I will be more likely to do so if there is a clear cut annual release date or if it is beyond a "standard" age of 0-2 years. However, I doubt I would be likely to check in Batch 6 Beatification vs. Beatification which kind of negates the whole point. Thinking about it, I should probably be more fastidious and I will likely work on it down the road.

I checkin to no year first and then a specific year if I have it after that. For real it's to increase my numbers. I'm not a big rater tbh.

If there are vintages of the beer I will check in to the vintages if there is a new vintage. So for 2014 Rose, I will check into that as regular Rose until 2015 is released.

The only exception to this is if someone I am drinking with checks in before me (which is typical) and then I piggyback off of whatever they did because I am super lazy.

Yes, because when I do a search that's what comes up. It is fun to have a record of which vintages I've had though too. I generally like more information rather than less.
