people would start "appreciating" (and by that i mean, lining up to purchase) classic beer styles if that's what everyone else on the facebook groups was doing. you can't assign superlatives to these styles the same way you can with an adjunct stout or a double dry hopped IPA. people are only lining up for a helles lager because it's being sold alongside a DANKJUICYHAZEBOMB. i'd love to see holy mountain (or monkish, or tree house, or tired hands, or whoever) release two lagers at once without a pale ale or bottle alongside them, and see how big of a line forms before opening.

having said that, i've been on the east coast all week and am looking forward to trying both of these when i get back.

i completely agree with people thinking a 4pk should be sold at super market pricing. 5.50 for a pint of super fresh IPA, and 4.50 for a pint of super fresh Helles using the best German malt we can get, that is naturally conditioned and was lagered for almost 6 weeks. Agreed Saurez is doing awesome stuff. We're about to hit our three year mark of production next week, but brewing lager was always in the plans, and we brewed one within a couple of months after getting started. It's a labor of love, and being able to properly can these is a dream and goal I've had for years, and we're working on being able to make more. I feel we do it correctly and give it the time it needs. Our lagers are completely babied by everyone that works here. There are some offered up, that I know for a fact are turn and burn beers (just a couple of weeks from start to finish). Anyway, these will both be on tap as well. Cans or not, I think they're both pretty tasty and worth having a glass of.

Thanks for the reply, I loved my visit to your Brewery last October. Lucked into the grapefruit/guava table release and I think it was dark retreat. Those beers along with some freemont beers fueled my Seattle to San Diego road trip.

I'm glad to see places putting in the effort on styles less traveled/hyped and if I was out your way I guarantee you I'd be scooping as much of your beer as I could for any given release.

Thanks for coming out to Philly a few months back and bringing some beer to pour, you guys are class acts. I wish you all the success in the world. Keep crushing. Wish I had gotten a shirt when I visited, pickins were slim at the time. I certainly failed myself by not buying a glass too. Haha. Enjoy the harvest. Good times are upon us all!

Tried Second Death yesterday and thought it was solid but could've been pushing those melanoidins a bit more. Didn't end up taking any cans home

Melanoidins shouldn't be present in a Munich Helles. There are a lot of recipes floating around for a while now, especially homebrew wise, that say to use Munich and Melanoidin malts. That's enitrely incorrect. 100% Pils malt and that's it. Pale and simple.

Ring the bell kids, cuz school is now in session.

I easily downed one of my 4-packs last night. Solid AF.

I understand the homebrewing recipes have always been shortcuts. You're saying that slight bready flavor in helles is wrong or the addition of specialty malts?

Oh yeah, cause I totally just got schooled

You did.
Unless you have your own brewery doing better things. Can't wait to hear about it.

bearsonacid, imma guess the reaction you're receiving here is primarily cuz you rolled in here trying to drop your beer knowledge on us, knowledge you also seemingly used to justify not picking up cans of Second Death because the beer didn't live up to Helles the style...

And no, you don't need to have a brewery to talk beer, but at least don't get so defensive when a professional brewer who clearly takes these classic styles very seriously calls your "incorrect" knowledge into question. Had Holy Mtn not bothered to comment here, maybe other people read your critique then start believing and spreading your incorrect assumptions as well. Just sayin'

Are melanoidins not formed in the maillard reaction during a decoction mash? I don't even know if this beer used a step mash but I believe that bready maltiness to be signature of the style, although it shouldn't be overdone. If any of this is wrong then I apologize for being too smart for my own good. I'm not trying to be pompous or arrogant about it but would like to learn why this is wrong other than being told nope, sorry that's incorrect.

And the beer's taste had nothing to do with my purchase decision. I said it was solid. I just paid for a move across the country and maybe couldn't justify an $18 4pk of helles right now. I'm not going to explain my life in each post. You assume a lot. Maybe just have an actual discussion instead of resorting to a hot take. If I hear "melanoidins" trending in the beer lines then everyone can punch me

Anyone in line for the $150 bottle 6-pack yet?
If anyone is going to be there and isn't planning on doing this I am in Houston and would gladly take your spot. Win-win for me helping the city and getting to try some HM.

I missed out on a few of the bottles in the 6-pack, so it'd be cool to get.
But I'll most likely just try to head in later that evening and leave a nice tip.

I love the decision to surprise release them today instead. "But I already requested off work/hired a babysitter/pre-traded!"

Sounds like they were swamped with people trying to work out a game plan to score the bottles. Better to just set them free now and get the money for Houston. Good for them.

Couldn't agree more :D Looking forward to the event tomorrow as well! Great work HolyMtn.

This beer right here is absolutely incredible. Perfect blend of barrel, funkiness, and brightness. Soft with a bit of acidity to balance everything out. Essentially the saison version of Misere.

And it's still available to go

1. NO FRUIT
2. It's clear, yo!
3. Oak barrels? Pssh. Needs some whiskey or bourbon or something else that lands me canned apricot nectar from New England.
4. NO FRUIT!

;)

I preferred City of Light over Choir, but it's a great beer. Glad there are still bottles too, I only bought one of this batch.

I still haven't bought one from this batch. Need to do that.

I also missed out on the Houston benefit yesterday, my kid had her curriculum night at school. Sounds like Mango Table is still on tap so I'm gonna try to sneak over for one this afternoon.
