I am looking at a recipe for a nut brown ale and it calls for .5 lbs of carastan malt but my LHBS doesn't have it. What would be a good substitute?

The recipe is:
6 lbs light extract syrup
1 lbs dextrin malt
.5 lbs carastan malt
6 oz. brown malt
4 oz. crystal malt
2 oz. black patent malt
2 oz. chocolate malt
1 oz. willamette hops
1 tsp. irish moss
wyeast 1056
6 oz. corn sugar

A light crystal malt (15L or 20L)

If that's a NUT brown recipe, you'll want a little victory malt to give it the nutty flavor, and only add the black patent if you want it to have a slight burnt flavor.

Cheers!

are you saying a light crystal malt to replace the carastan malt?
and how much victory malt?
does the victory malt replace the black patent?

where'd you get this recipe?

i would brew it essentially 'as is' from BYO...2oz of black patent is not going to make your beer taste burnt...
a good sub for the carastan would probably be a 20L or 40L crystal...

Go for 12 oz. of crystal 20L or 30L (8 oz. replacing the carastan), double the chocolate, dump the black patent. You're fine without victory as the brown malt will give similar flavors.
