Hey All,
I'm on vaca in Tokyo, Japan and I came across this:
Nipponia Beer. It's brewed with an "ancient" Japanese barley called Kaneko and uses Sorachi Ace. The bottle and company website doesn't say explicitly, but I believe this is indeed a SMaSH that clocks in at 6.5% ABV.
The flavors were amazing. It has a very rich, deep yellow color and a nice malty flavor to match it. The Sorachi Ace is one heckuva hop. It has a very pronounced lemon flavor and a rather bitter finish. I don't think it's the best hop flavor I've had, but it was rather nice.
It's a little pricey per bottle (about $7) but I think it was well worth it. It was so good I might try to find a way to replicate it during my next brew season.
Is this beer available to those State-side? Has anyone ever had it?
