I got a kombucha kit and the SCOBY was basically a block about 3"X1"x1". I made the tea and sugar put in container and added SCOBY and starter liquid. The SCOBY sank to bottom after a day or two and what I believe a new one started covering the top. Very thin layer. But then the container got bumped and now the new one is hanging in the tea not on the top.

I am willing to use/sacrifice this batch of tea to get a good SCOBY created for future batches. Should I let the tea go and see if a new SCOBY forms on top? Should the brick be growing? Should I add more sugar to aid in growth? Brick is on right, "new" SCOBY is on the left

After posting this I took cover off to inspect closer and noticed a film on top which I suspect is new growth. Should I let sit and build up or is more sugar suggested? If I drain liquid and make new batch of tea would I pour over the SCOBY? I know a lot basic questions but this is my first batch and I am learning.

Sounds like it is progressing just fine. It takes several days for the "baby" SCOBY to develop. It will keep getting thicker each day. I don't think you will notice much change with the original SCOBY block. Try to resist urge to keep taking cover off to check. The less it is disturbed the better. Take a taste after 7 days. When it is tart with just a little bit of sweetness it is ready to bottle. I use a clean turkey baster to draw out a sample for tasting trying not to disturb the new SCOBY on top too much.
